“Worth the detour”

Molen De Adriaan Museum
Ranked #5 of 77 things to do in Haarlem
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The museum operates on limited days and hours, so do plan ahead if you intend to go. The museum was closed on the day of our visit to Haarlem, so we were not able to go inside. But still, I would highly recommend doing a 10-minute stroll just to see it. It is a very picturesque and photogenic windmill. This is probably the most easily accessible windmill to visit if you're not visiting the countryside. There's also one in Amsterdam but it's a longer walk from town center.

Molen De Adriaan is a old mill in Haarlem next to the water. On the outside it looks modern, as part has been rebuild, due to a fire. The welcome area has a small shop & seating area - very modern.
When you go with the guide into the windmill, it's lovely and old. The museum is well laidout, friendly guides, and the wind is even working when the weather allows.
We enjoyed it the museum, and went afterwards to the restaurant next door for a lunch on the terrace! Also lovely!!

We took a side trip to Haarlem and we were treated to a quiet, charming small town 15 minutes from Amsterdam. Just outside the train station you can print out a free map of the different points of interest at an automated kiosk. We took a leisurely walk to the windmill and enjoyed scenery around Haarlem. When we reached the windmill we watched a brief video about the history. Our tour guide took us upstairs into the windmill and explained and showed us several different wooden models of the windmill and its purpose back then. Later, we climbed the stairs out into the open deck and we were treated to spectacular views of the windmill and of Haarlem. He pointed out different landmarks and gave us a brief background on each. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and our tour guide was the best. It is one of the better windmill tours in Holland. If you plan on going, check their hours of operation as they are not open daily.
