Atmospheric building with a small but worthy collection of mainly Dutch paintings. Loved the juxtaposition of some modern art (Glenn Brown) in amongst the more ancient.

The best collection of 17th century Dutch Masters after the RIjksmuseum in Amsterdam. Wonderful location too and beautifully arranged museum. Because its smaller, you get to aprreciate the paintings better than in the big Rijksmuseum, where there are to many groups shouting around you. Highly recommended!

Wonderful museum to visit. Excellent old rooms with furniture, old paintings, nice feeling, good restaurant. Outstanding facilities also for handicapped and children. Family friendly museum situated on one of the oldest streets (old buildings ...) in Haarlem. Lovely garden op to the public in the middle of it all.

But don't let that keep you away -- the trove of Dutch treasure is a great reason to visit, with a few Brueghels and other Dutch masters, the collection is fairly deep. My only complaint is that there are only about 12 Frans Hals painting here, so I guess his best work is larded in other museums, like the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.

If you're taking a leisurely trip to Amsterdam then I recommend half a day in the town of Haarlem. It's 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam and they run every few minutes. The area round the station is typically grotty but walk a kilometre and you're in the historic centre with its huge market square and massive church. It's a very quiet town (I suspect it's inhabited largely by commuters) with lots of ancient buildings and its own network of canals.

A few minutes from the market square is the Frans Hals museum, installed in some old almshouses set up for the poor men of the town. I don't know where the poor women went but the men must have been very happy here.

Hals is best known in the UK as the painter of The Laughing Cavalier (not laughing and not a cavalier, but hey); here you see what a fine portraitist he was, along with his large canvases of militia, very like the famous 'Night Watch'.
