Very fine exhibition of Hals and contemporary artists paintings : also interesting permanent exhibition.
Very easy access by train from Amsterdam - 20 minutes, and nice walk from the station to the museum through old Haarlem.

“Wow...what can I say?”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

hard to find in Haarlem but worth the trip. Great museum to a Rembrandt contemperary. Rembrandt got all the press but Frans and Dirck Hals were great artists in the Golden Age and deserve a better showcase. Glad its in Haarlem...bucaue they were "local boys" and made the subjects come to them.

“Interesting and fun”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

I really don't like 'old' art, so my expectations of the Frans Hals museum were low. But it was great!
The free headphones that provided me information of every painting were really convenient. Because of that, the paintings became really interesting. For foreigners, but also for Dutch people, I really recommend this museum.

“Special Frans Hals Exibihit”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

A special exhibit was on show. There were more Frans Hals paintings than normal on loan from various museums. There were also Rembrandts to compare with the Hals. It was a wonderful exhibit, but was viewable in a morning or afternoon.

“Frans Hals, his flamboyant style and genius”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

If you like 17th century Dutch art, this is the place to visit in Haarlem.
The Frans Hals museum is housed in the old men's alms house, a home for elderly men founded in 1609 and governed by five regents, whose portraits, painted by Frans Hals in 1664, are on display.
I visited in April and enjoyed tremendously the special exhibit Frans Hals: Eye to eye with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian. 23 March - 28 July, 2013. This exhibit offers the possibility to discover first hand his genius by comparing his approach and style to other similar portraits. The added advantage in April was also a tulip exhibit displayed in a variety of contemporary vases. www.franshalsmuseum.nl
Wonderful experience. If you like museum visits always by a Museum card. It is good for a year. After 5 visits the card has been paid for. Added advantage: you can skip the lines.
