If you like nice art this is a nice place to be. The building itself is very nice to see, and the art inside is also very nice.

Extraordinary art exhibit in a wonderfully historic setting. The building that houses this beautifully curated collection is fascinating on its own and the perfect atmosphere for viewing the works. We found some really unique stuff in the gift shop, too. Note: We went to Haarlem via the scenic train from Dam Square, just for a Sunday excursion. We really walking around the charming town, and managed to stop in 3 restaurants (one just for amazing Dutch coffee) and we were pretty blown away by all three. We had a particularly wonderful lunch of tapas at a little Spanish restaurant/tavern, located on the main street heading back to the train.

This museum, located in an old orphanage, houses many paintings by Frans Hals and other Dutch masters. It is well worth the short trip from Amsterdam.

This museum is housed in a nice old building, but inside it is new and pleasant to walk around and spent two hours or so. It has a large collection of paintings, some from older painters from Haarlem, then there are the main paintings of Frans Hals and also plenty of paintings by other painters from the same period. It also has a vast collection of silverware, old pottery and old furniture.

The great thing about the museum, at least when i was there, is that it is almost empty.. at most maybe 20 people in the whole building when i was there, so you can take your time and look at ease without someone looking over your shoulder or jumping in front of you.

Afterwards I also had some pie and coffee in the cafe of the museum... also there it was quiet, i was the only one there!..

If you like the Dutch golden age and you like Frans Hals then it is well worth the travel!.

Don't miss this museum if you're in Haalem, and it's even worth the trip to Haarlem if you're in Amsterdam. Hals is one of the classic Dutch masters. The museum itself is in a lovely building, and it was quiet and uncrowded on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Take you time and enjoy!
