Owner description: Zuiderzee Museum - Story of a rich culture The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen revives the stories of people who once lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee. See, hear, taste and smell everyday life around the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk (IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) changed the sea into the IJsselmeer in 1932. The Zuiderzee Museum is oriented toward the history, the current situation and the future of this area. It focuses upon the themes of water, crafts and communities. This story is visualized in the Outdoor Museum with historical buildings, and in the Indoor Museum with thematic exhibitions.

A nice mix of viewing, demonstrations, activities and role-play. Everything together makes you experience life at the beginning of the 20th century around the Zuiderzee.

I think the Zuiderzeemuseum is a definite must see. But... not when the Buitenmuseum part of it is closed. The Binnenmuseum is nice and worth the trouble when one is in the neighbourhood.
But it is not as awesome as the outside part. There is something in it for everyone. Invigorating in the spring, nice in the summer and with a certain dreamlike quality when you are here on a autumnal day.

An outside museum, showing how the Dutch from "fishing villages" lived a while ago. Nice things to do for kids, like several attractions, games, dress up like back in the days, etc. When here you've got to try the smoked herring! It's amazing. You'll never find anything like that anywhere.

The Zuiderzee Museum is well worth spending the best part of a day, offering a great view on a past that we only remember vaguely. While there is an indoor museum and an outdoor museum, spend your time at the superior outdoor museum whenever the weather allows that.

The whole complex has been faithfully recreated; some buildings in fact have been moved to Enkhuizen from their original site. It is a very interesting place, with demonstrations of how to make a fishing net, a brush, how to smoke fish. It is a very pretty place too - green green grass, well-maintained buildings
