We are seasoned independent travellers in our early fifties, and the hotel exceeded our expectations for a 5 night stay. All the hotel staff, reception and breakfast/bar area were very friendly and helpful and engaging. The hotel is directly opposite a trambus stop, which made for very convenient access. Our room was on 2nd floor next to lift, but very quiet, we didn't overlook the street. Room is perfect size to move around and store bags etc . Modern décor, bathroom is good. We found the doonas used very hot to sleep under , and no flat sheets on bed. The breakfast was excellent, nice healthy choices and plentiful. We also made use of their free tea/coffee during day/evening service at the bar, and nice area to sit in. Also free wifi was very good. Hotel is great location, just a short tram stop or walk from the main areas, we were very happy with the location. Lots of really nice restaurants, pubs, cafes very close by walking distance. Would definitely stay here again if we returned to Amsterdam, very happy overall.

Room Tip: Very quiet room on the 2nd floor looking out to garden area

Lovely hotel v modern and really good location for walking or taking tram to major attractions. Breakfast v good, usual continental style, lots of cheese, ham, cereals, bread, croissants etc. Staff v attentive and helpful. Only minor downside is rooms are small and bathroom v dark but on a weekend break we weren't in Amsterdam to sit in our hotel room. For a weekend break it is a perfect hotel in a great location. The Pijp has a fab market and vg restaurants/bars away from the touristy Dam square and Leidesplein. Definitely would rather this area over those!

This hotel could be quite alright if it would cost less than half of the actual price. But for 160,- euro/night for a double room it is pure insolence. Very small double room: a bed and space for just two trolleys. The only "design" in this so-called "design hotel" was a sticker on the wall which began to fall off. Bathroom with only one dim light - no lady can put on make up here because it is way too dark. You take a shower and the bathroom is flooded - no wonder cause there is no wall of glass around it (only on one side) or at least a curtain. The garbage bin in the bathroom was broken. I asked on the reception for a new garbage bin and for a drop of glue - to fix the "design" sticker. Receptionist seemed quite irritated, as if my plea was kind of inexecutable ("I don't know if we have another garbage bin..."), but she promised "to tell the housekeeping, then wait and see". Nothing happened for two days - so a harmless wish like this one cannot be fulfilled... maybe because there is no housekeeping at all? Don't know why it is so difficult to change a bin. If you rent bikes (like we did), you get an old mare with no light (mine was defective), but with a horribly rattling bicycle chain, so that everybody in the city can hear when you come nearer... No one had looked after our two bikes for months, that's for sure. Breakfast is alright, best thing in this hotel (good coffee!). But when they say "breakfast on weekends until 11 a.m.", that means that they begin putting up the chairs on the empty tables and starting the vacuum cleaner at 11.01 a.m. - no matter that some guests are still eating their last toast and drinking some coffee. So our overall impression of this nicely located hotel in the old part of town: in Hotel V they want to earn as much money as they can with the smallest possible effort. Of course we'll come back to the wonderful city of Amsterdam, but definitely we will avoid this tourist trap!!!

Wow, it really sounds like this garbage bin and bike issues ruined your stay, and we are really sorry to hear that! You're right, it should have been dealt with better than that. If you find it in your heart to return, please send us a message at stay@hotelv.nl, and we promise to make your next stay better than your first.

We stayed two nights at Hotel V - the location as other posters mentioned is good, within walking distance anywhere you'd like to go. The room we had on the 2nd floor was spacious, modern and clean. Comfortable beds and pillows. We arrived early and the staff was kind enough to offer us to have breakfast until the room was being cleaned so that we may checkin early. The breakfast was nice bonus!

The only negative I found was that the safe in our room didn't work but in the grand scheme of things it was not a big deal.

Highly recommend if you are looking for a good priced hotel within walking distance to everywhere in Amsterdam.

My fiance and I had the opportunity to stay at Hotel V during our trek through Europe. I cannot say enough about our experience. The hotel itself is in immaculate condition, newly renovated with an inviting lobby, bar and sitting area for drinks and continental breakfast in the morning. The staff were exceptional and made us feel very comfortable from the minute we arrived. Our room was beautiful and a lot more than we had expected despite being on the lower level. We enjoyed the modern yet comfortable room with an excellent bathroom. If I have any advice for anyone traveling to Hotel V, I encourage you to read through the resource binder they leave for you as it extremely informative, helpful and up to date with any question you might have. Enjoy.

We stayed four nights at Hotel V. The location is very good.Very nice staff, they could not do more to make our stay to be perfect. Breakfast was really good and also free wifi. Also I have to say the only thing was the size of the room. It was really small. Anyhow I would stay there again!

Room Tip: You should pay for bigger room.

Found this hotel by chance and decided the photos and review made it most desirable for a May break. Let me start with the positives. The location is quiet, which i wanted yet close to the main attractions and good restaurants. The staff are without doubt the greatest asset. They were so kind, always cheerful and eager to please. Similarly, breakfast was of a high standard with much choice.
Now the room situation. My friends twin was on 2nd floor and although tiny, the room was pleasant though let down by outside noise of the side road. My single room was in the basement. It was, in summary, most disappointing. Obviously, i knew it was a basement room, the website does not mislead this point, but it made me think i was in a prison cell. It was so dark and dingy and whoever authorised the choice of colours - dark grey and almost black, needs to go to design school! The window is tiny and there was no ceiling light so even with lamps on, you struggled and i Have tip top eye sight! the bathroom is the same. No window, but chosen dark tiles which albeit stylish, just don't work in a tiny room which is already lacking in natural light. Then there were the maintenance issues. From check in until departure, the shower leaked...always small drops but they added up and whilst I told the front desk i could live with it, looking back, I don't see why i should have had to dry up the mess...anyway, my error. Then the mini safe from day one did not work and could not be fixed as the engineer request would take a few days or something, so again i lived with it, sharing my friend's. Then in the bathroom, on the last morning, it dawned on me that a bulb had gone in the tiny bathroom. Again, it would have made no difference to the ultimate darkness but it was seriously dark in there. It just suggested to me that there was a high turn over of guests here and perhaps maintenance issues. My final gripe was the price. For my single, it was 113euros a night. Few days before travelling, it had gone down to 75 or something and I felt this was more a realistic price, for with all the few problems encountered, it was nowhere near worth the money. If the staff had been awful, then I would have been tempted to launch a big complaint there and then based on what i experienced. So that is it, can recommend the location, staff, breakfast but not the single room whatsoever!

"It was so dark and dingy and whoever authorised the choice of colours - dark grey and almost black, needs to go to design school!"
I showed that to the owner who designed the rooms, and she could only laugh. Thank you for your very honest(-but-brutal) review! However, this is all relative, and we still love the design! To help combat the darkness in the room, we made special glittering golden floors, as we knew that this would be an issue.
For the next time, booking a room on a higher floor (standard or higher) is recommended, or book one of our new V lofts- located next door to the hotel and with a lot of natural daylight!
As for the maintenance issues, well for that we really are sorry. If you come back, please send us a message beforehand (stay@hotelv.nl), and we will give you a free upgrade to one room category higher so you can see what life is like in the upperfloors. :)

Kind Regards,
Amanda
