This spacious apartment was an ideal accommodation for many reasons. First is the location. It is situated on PC Hoofstradt the ritzy shopping center and it actually sits on the floor above Tiffany & Company. This makes the location both quiet and safe; there is often a private security guard in their vehicle on the street below guarding the ritzy shops. Since most of these high end stores close before evening it produces very quiet evenings, even during King's day there was minimal street noise. It is also very close to public transportation including trams, buses and even canal cruise boats. We used Stromma for both a free one-hour cruise and also for hop-on-hop-off transportation to various locations (first stop gets you to Museum Van Loon, Hermitage and Rembrandt House). The trams, which were included with our I Amsterdam card, where fantastic (we used lines 2 and 5) and a quick efficient way to get into the city. The location is also great for access to the three major art museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk) and very close to the wonderful Vondelpark.
Please note that older reviews often used Bus 197 from the airport that stops about a block-and-half from the apartment. However, the new number for the bus is 397 and this makes this bus a little less desirable. The old Bus 197 originated from the airport making it likely to that you would find space for yourself and your luggage; however, the new Bus 397 originates from a more distant site and it was already somewhat full when it arrived. There was very little room for luggage and we had two 24 inch suitcases that were difficult to control on turns while we stood. We would not use this bus if you have suitcases larger than carry-on or have mobility issues.
The apartment itself is spacious (I estimated about 1065 square feet based on pacing it off) with large windows and that make it very bright and sunny. The apartment gets very high marks for closet space, comfortable king-sized bed, large bathroom, comfortable living room, excellent flat-screen TV with great English channel selection and a wonderful terrace with great tree and flower views. The online photos do not do the terrace justice.
Four tips, beware that the shower has a slow leak towards the toilet due to the design; not a big issue. Second, my wife was concerned that photographs did not show an electrical outlet in the bathroom for a hair drying. There is one but it is behind the bathroom mirror! Finally, as has been written before, the steps are steep but we are almost 70 and we were able to manage even with a suitcase that weighed 42 pounds. Finally, some Americans may be perplexed by the washer/dryer combination with the complicated dial being in Dutch. We have had the opportunity to work with this type of washer/dryer in the past and there is a learning curve. The specific model is the Miele WT 2670. You can download the instructions in English and even print off a page that has the dial in English making it much easier to comprehend. We would also recommend typing in that model and you can find at least two videos in English that demonstrate how to use it.
In sum, this ranks as our number one experience in our last five trips to Europe and we would recommend it to anyone except those with significant mobility issues. If we returned to Amsterdam, we would definitely stay here again.
Finally, we would like to thank the outstanding hosts- Gustav, Maria and Carl. They live above and were wonderful. Surprisingly, Carl and Maria are from Sweden. Our interactions were entirely with Carl and he is both friendly, responsive and speaks excellent English.
This is a great location if you want to visit the he Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum. Both museums are wonderful.
On Amsterdam's toniest shopping street, the apartment is well furnished and of good size. We were concerned the neighborhood would be sterile with limited opportunities to engage locals who were not in the tourist trade. While it is true that the immediate area has only a handful of moderate restaurants, it's a trade-off. It's easy walking distance to De Pijp which is filled with locals doing local things, great restaurants with every ethnicity, and fun - some elegant and some funky - streets, and restaurants on every block. Within 300 meters are five museums including three of Amsterdam's best. The owners live immediately upstairs and are very accommodating. It has to be said that the stairs are narrow and steep even by Amsterdam's standards, but there is just one flight so we - in our 70's - made it easily with lots of luggage, so just about anyone can..
This apartment is bright and spacious. There are big windows that look out over the street that has shops such as Tiffany's and a terrace at the back of the property. It was an attractive street unlike the high end shopping streets of other cities such as London. It is small and charming.
The location is great for the museums like the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh. The airport bus drops you a 2 minute walk away.
There is a supermarket very nearby.
We had a really enjoyable, comfortable stay and I would really recommend this place to couples, looking for a spacious, relaxing apartment from which to explore and enjoy Amsterdam from.
This apartment is superb with every conceivable amenity. The decor is bright and welcoming, the rooms are spacious, the bathroom is modern and the well-equipped kitchen is roomy with plenty of bench space.
The location is unbeatable, a few minutes walk from good bars, restaurants, supermarkets, transport and all the major museums. The apartment was well prepared for us on arrival with a welcoming bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, and plenty of detergent for the dish washer and washing machine.
The only downside is a rather daunting staircase up to the first floor (I am 73) but Carl the owner insisted on carrying our luggage up for us. He was most helpful in every way and made our stay most enjoyable. Thank you Carl.
Considering the quality of the apartment and its location, I think it was also very good value.
The apartment was absolutely wonderful and well-appointed. Although a little outside of the city center, it is very near Vondelpark and the Rijkmuseum. We appreciated that it's on a street that's very quiet at night. The bed was amazingly comfortable and we had no problems sleeping. I highly recommend this apartment for a stay in Amsterdam.
