You know those holiday evenings when you can't be bothered to go to a restaurant, but end up doing so because there isn't anywhere nearby that does really good takeaway food? Your sense of regret and despair is what Peperwortel extinguishes with a cornucopia of tapas from all over the world!
This rather unassuming place was in a perfect location for where we were staying (a really nice and quiet bit of town away from all the excesses of other Amsterdam tourism). It has a fabulous selection of food from all over, but done in a great way that it all goes together, no matter what you have. We ended up having a vegetarian selection of a number of things including ratatouille, cows-cous and, by a long way, the best chimichanga that I have ever eaten. Ok, I haven't been to Mexico, but in the same way that the Dutch take the English language and speak it more proficiently than the English, I have the feeling that Paperwortel does the same thing with food. Because I was so overwhelmed by the chimichanga, I have completely forgotten what else was on offer apart from an enormous lamb kofta which was tempting me away from a meat-free selection like some sort of gastronomic siren.
Service was great (very patient whilst my family spent more than enough time choosing what they would have) and gave us the option of warming everything up in their array of mini-ovens that they have ready for just such a demand. Our order also came with a generous helping of sour-cream, gratis.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough and, if anyone does go there on the back of this review, if you could obtain the recipe for that chimichanga from the chef (by foul means or fair) I would be eternally grateful!
