Good for: Romantic
Dining options: Late Night, Lunch, Dinner, Reservations
Neighborhood: Jordaan
Description: Balthazars Keuken restaurant in the heart of the Jordaan district is one of Amsterdam's most special restaurants. It is a long, narrow space set in a former smithy, with scrubbed wooden floors, an open kitchen with pans and utensils hanging in plain view. The moss-coloured banquettes, unadorned wooden seating, and plain white table linens add to the ambience of simplicity and relaxation. And it's tiny, seating just about 30 inside and a few more on the bijou terrace in fine weather. 'Romantic' must be Balthazar's middle name, in spite of the plain surroundings. Owners Karen Gaasterland and Alain Parry create internationally-inflected three-course fixed-price dinners, with a menu that changes every week. They create. You enjoy. No choice about the dishes, though. The starters are tidbits meant to appeal to all. The mains are perfectly-sourced fish or meat with sides. House wine is from the Languedoc, chosen to complement the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Saturday. Groups up to ten can dine in the restaurant then, or hire the entire venue for private events during the rest of the week. Very popular, very packed.

“casual restaurant, nice food!”

If you go to Amsterdam and you want a restaurant with no tourists you should go to this one! You have a 3 course menu which is chabges every week i gess, you just choose meat or fish as main. The restaurant and the kitchen is the same area. You have wine by glass, and house wine, very casual restaurant with nice food, and you can stay after meal with friends chating
Need to book a table as is very small.

“Great food. Laid back vibe. Eat with the locals.”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

It's a well-priced three course set menu that changes daily. The appetizers come out on a tiered tray for sharing. Each diner chooses a meat or fish entree. Simple wines by the glass. Casual and relaxed in the way small places in the nooks and crannies of the West Village or Brooklyn are. For those nights you just want a very good dinner without much fuss. Make reservations because the place gets packed.

“Fantastic food & service”
Reviewed June 3, 2013 via mobile

We were staying just down the road from this place and, like most people here, had read about it in Time Out. So, so glad that we decided to make a reservation and have dinner there. FABULOUS!! Love the fact that there is no menu, why do 15 in a mediocre way when you can do 2 perfectly?? The goats cheese starter with black currant sauce is divine, potatoes with truffles was a bit too rich for me but the kids loved it!haha Our table was divided between 4 porks and 2 cod, but not one of us could choose between them and were constantly nicking off the fish eaters plates. Wine list is, as you would expect, compact but complimentary to the food. Prosecco and brandy cocktail to start was delish.

There is only 4 people working here, but I have to say they are wonderful. Attentive, knowledgable and clearly passionate about their little restaurant. I had originally ordered the fish but the pork was cooked already, was one of the best mistakes ever :-)

If you eat anywhere in Amsterdam make it Balthazars Kitchen.

“Great iberico pork! Reservations needed.”
Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

We followed recommendation from timeout and we did not regret trying to find this little restaurant which was a little further away from the maddening crowd.

It offers a 3 course set menu of eur 35 per person and one can only choose the mains of either cod fish or iberico. The starters consisted of a platter of duck rilletes, truffle sauces potatato, beet root marscapone on rye crackers and sausage. The variety was very delicious.

Mains were mixed with the fish lacking any flavour. However the iberico was outstanding and clearly the star of the meal.

Dessert was Irish coffee ice cream. Presentation was ordinary but as desserts go it was a decent ending.

Charming tiny place packed with diners with just the chef and two wait staff who were friendly and efficient. Definitely a highlight in Amsterdam in terms of food.

“Excellent Local Food”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

We found this place after reading a review online. However, we did not believe in reservations and was quite surprised that we were allowed to have dinner here. It was only 6pm on a weekday but the place was already packed! There was some elbow squeezing to make room for the two of us but that was just the start of the surprise.

Price is fixed for a three-course menu, including starters and dessert. Although if you order wine, the total would be different from the rest. What made it surprising was that there was no menu card, you just have to choose between 2 main course, which was prepared by the cook on that day itself.

A word of advice: Reservations required. There was never an empty seat during our 2 hours there, those leaving were immediately being replaced by the newcomers.
