Description: Balthazars Keuken restaurant in the heart of the Jordaan district is one of Amsterdam's most special restaurants. It is a long, narrow space set in a former smithy, with scrubbed wooden floors, an open kitchen with pans and utensils hanging in plain view. The moss-coloured banquettes, unadorned wooden seating, and plain white table linens add to the ambience of simplicity and relaxation. And it's tiny, seating just about 30 inside and a few more on the bijou terrace in fine weather. 'Romantic' must be Balthazar's middle name, in spite of the plain surroundings. Owners Karen Gaasterland and Alain Parry create internationally-inflected three-course fixed-price dinners, with a menu that changes every week. They create. You enjoy. No choice about the dishes, though. The starters are tidbits meant to appeal to all. The mains are perfectly-sourced fish or meat with sides. House wine is from the Languedoc, chosen to complement the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Saturday. Groups up to ten can dine in the restaurant then, or hire the entire venue for private events during the rest of the week. Very popular, very packed.

We saw this small restaurant on a walk; returned to make a reservation and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and food. Our hostess went out of her way to make us feel welcome and answered all our questions about the food, and the history of the restaurant. It is prix fixe, with only the main course decision to make. I had the fish which was a mixed seafood with sauce and was excellent. My husband had the steak, and thought it was the best steak he's had anywhere in ages. We highly recommend going there.

I like the home atmosphere, its little size and the few table available. The food is fresh, excellent and prepared in front of you. Its like being at home with friends. A place to go!

Balthazar's run a set menue only - which is nice since you know it's from fresh ingredients and hasn't been in the freezer or anything like it.
Two main courses are available, and at our visit my gf chose the fish while I had the meat. Sadly, it didn't agree at all with her taste buds - which she also told the waiter as he came by to ask whether everything was satisfactory. He then did nothing except say he was sorry - didn't offer her to try the meat instead (a small extra charge would have been perfectly OK with us!) but instead just walked away. To further complicate matters - a while later the same waiter dropped a bottle of wine behind our table, resulting in wine splashing on my gf's trouserlegs - which luckily were black. However, he didn't even check whether we were OK or apologize to us at this time either. Sadly this waiter pretty much spoiled the experience since the rest of the staff were really friendly, especially the proprietress, and the meat, the starters and the dessert was also top notch.

From the moment we walked in we felt at home. The service and food was flawless and there is no other Dutch food place we have found in Amsterdam with such attention and care. Male sure you book though. It is very hard to get a table.

Food is good, creative cooking staying traditional, with good products. Nice service, though very crowded, better book. Nice place, "in-the-kitchen" modern and simple atmosphere.
