Make a reservation as Balraj fills up fast especially on weekends. Good flavor, friendly service, apparently a local favorite.

We were treated at this restaurant by our local hosts, restaurant considered to be quite popular?
Like many places in central Amsterdam, this restaurant is small(narrow). It is family run and small. We had a lot of starters and the main courses (We were a very large group). The food I would say was average, the service OK, not really geared up to serve large groups. Considering the speed at which this small kitchen delivers and the fact that the food tastes pre-prepared and reheated, I would rate it just average. But awash in an European city, longing for Indian food? Then its OK , you can get by on this. Like many of the Indian restaurants here, the rice will be slightly undercooked , the biryani has lettuce sprinkled on it etc.(common among the restaurants here, but otherwise OK if you have no other options.

Balraj is a small Indian restaurant. One of the oldest in town. It has a lay-out that's typical for Amsterdam called 'pijpela' (literally drawer for pipes) which means that it is a long and narrow place with two rows of tables and a corridor in the middle, It's situated at the Haarlemmerdijk which is a very nice, lively street. Balraj is visited by a mix of locals and tourists and it's always crowded, so making a reservation is a must. It has a nice not to long menu with several all time Indian favourites. Especially the tandoori dishes are recommendable. The service is excellent and friendly, so are the prices.

The food was pretty good! Didn't get the feeling they like tourists that much (the owner clearly greeted the local clients differently). However, I thought the service was good too and that they were very polite. Would definitely go back for more!

Good variety of Indian dishes all served with naan bread, rice and daal. Vegetarian for under €13. Now my first choice when in the area and looking for quick dinner.
