I was introduced to the Café de Jaren when I took guests to lunch near the University of Amsterdam library (just off the Rokin). One of my friends suggested it as a nearby lunch place. It is located at Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20 (not far from the Droog retail store). The cafe is quite large, at least 2 stories, light-filled and spacious. We all ordered the soup, which came with fresh-baked bread and water.
Later that day, I invited another colleague out to dinner, and he choose the same cafe. Again, it was in walking distance of where we were. He said the food was quiet excellent, and it was. The dinner menu was selective, maybe 6-8 entries available, with the salad bar buffet, a lovely addition. I ordered salmon, perfectly prepared.
From the street I noticed that the restaurant has a large outdoor deck. Even in the chilly March weather, there were diners on the deck. I think i will wait until a warmer visit to try it out!
