We had a dinner at another restaurant and just had drinks at the bar. Friendly staff and nice interior in this old and historic building.

Cafe Americain is atached to the American Hotel. It's on the list for historical monuments, recognized for it's "Art Deco style period" from 1910-1940. The food was good as ws the wine. A great location for people watching.

I should start by saying that I wondered into this restaurant out of sheer exhaustion and just wanted a cold drink and warm meal. With that said, the food was just ok but the service was excellent. The beer was cold, and they had a good selection. The menu is huge! There are tons of options, and usually this is a good thing if you can do all of them well. I think this was not the case. I had a pizza- it was ok, the crust was really good but the meat was sort of weird. My fiance had bitterballen (bitter balls) usually an Amsterdam classic- not really good at all. He also had steak and fries- of course the fries were delicious ;) This restaurant is very cozy with booth seating on one side of the table and chair on the other, a small candle on the table and a large window in the front that provides great people watching.

Tried them twice. Wanted to like it. First time sat at the bar. Only 6 people sitting there but bartender couldn't get drinks or orders right - he was the only bartender for the whole place and mad busy. Thought we'd try them again for dinner. They put us at a table next to the maitre'd. Thought we were going to be run over from all of the flurry - lots of staff but no organization - and LOUD. Bussers kept coming out of the kitchen without a clue where the food should go. We waited and waited for our courses. Asked for bread but it didn't come. Soup tasted like it came from a can and was cool. A manager took our bowls and asked how I liked it, seeing that mine wasn't eaten much. I said it wasn't hot. No sorry, or another hot bowl or even taking it off our bill. Salad finally came. Supposed to be with "crispy quail". They was a boiled, fatty leg on it - very unappetizing. We were already done with our wine and had now been there for awhile. We told the waiter we were done and wanted to leave. He said that our risotto was on the way from the kitchen. We waited 5 minutes watching the kitchen door hopefully. Nothing. So we asked the manager for the check. It was wrong. Overcharged on 2 items and then when we pointed it out the waiter brought us the menu and argued that we had ordered the more expensive oysters. No we didn't. Well, you ordered a Grey Goose martini. No, I had gin and not the top shelf (since they didnt have any). They finally changed the bill and removed the nearly $20 of extra charges. We left still hungry and $140 poorer. The only thing good was the wine!

This is one of our favorite spots for Saturday lunch...especially in nice weather when you can sit on the patio overlooking fountain and Leidseplein. Sandwiches are about the most expensive in city.
