Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

“great place hidden in touristic red light district”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

I had previously heard about the place but it was only recently i managed to get to dinner there. It is a family owned business and this was a positive thing from the beginning (Vlaams is the same). The place is on one of the narrow streets of the busy and touristic red light district. it is typical Dutch, rather small but gets packed very quickly so make sure you have a reservation if you plan dinner after 8pm.
There is no menu, the waiter comes and explains everything at the table. The starter came with great variety from fish to pate, sausages etc.
The main course was absolutely delicious - i opted for lamb in garlic sauce and it was one of the best lamb i ate so far in Amsterdam. It is rather hard to find good lamb in Amsterdam, so hands down for this. They have chicken fish and beef as well in the menu all coming with salad and potato side dishes.
The portions are huge as well.
For dessert we had an amazing and rich cheesecake, all desserts are home made.
This is a great place for a great dinner, beautiful location, the venue is nice and tidy and very Dutch and cheery on top..the service was great! You usually do not expect this in Amsterdam, but they really took their time to explain and to make you feel comfortable.
The price is probably one of the best you can find for a good dinner in the center, we paid 130 euros for a full menu and drinks for 3 persons - you can hardly find such a deal around Amsterdam if you want something truly good.
Definitely a must!

Without doubt one of the quirkiest, vibrant and great dining experiences I have had in ages. Very personal approach with no menu but one of the staff pulling up a chair and talking you through there menu with some amazing food, brilliant service and great atmosphere. Will be going back again on outré next visit to Amsterdam.

“Very good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

Small, comfortable, menu is verbal so it changes. Fresh, good food, really nice service. Recommended by someone who sat at the table next to us for dinner one night, really glad we went there. We had a late lunch so getting a seat was not a problem, it is small, so a busy dinner night could be more of a challenge.

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2014

This place was recommended to us by a friend who had visited over a year before we went. We arrived early as we knew it would get busy, and it fast filled up! Pear tart is a must for dessert. This was a very reasonably priced meal for what it was too. If you have one night in Amsterdam make sure you eat here!

“Not for "Posh People", but a Lovely Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2014

Like others who have reviewed this restaurant, we had to wait for 20 minutes or so to get a seat. The place is crowded and rightly so: it is good food (though not "gourmet" by any means), served in a lively atmosphere. It is usually heaving because it is so popular. We were seated next to a Dutch couple so much in love that I half expected hidden violins to start playing. It is that kind of place: young Dutch people would come here on a date, without any wish to impress, and sit next to university lecturers discussing phenomenology, or even Americans wondering why this wasn't more like "home". It is busy, noisy and crowded, but there are good reasons for all of this: it is good food at bargain prices. The atmosphere made me feel 10 years (or more) younger.
The day's menu is posted outside the door and, once you are inside, you have to rely on the waiters telling you what is available. This is no bad thing, as you can ask them about the food. It is tucked away on a back street and needs to be hunted out; the hunt is worth it.
The next time we are in Amsterdam, we will go to it again.
