Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

On a recommendation from our hotel, The Mauro Mansion, we found what must surely be one of the very best restaurants in Amsterdam.
Even at 7pm all the tables were full with several couples waiting in the bar area; after around 30 minutes we were shown to our table and our waiter took great pains to explain the evenings menu - around 5 starters and a similar number of main courses. We much preferred this to the typical menu offering countless items, whereas everything we were offered was freshly sourced and cooked.
The atmosphere was vibrant, the food extremely good and the wine very agreeable. Despite a constant number of customers awaiting tables we were not pressured whatsoever and had a superb night out.
For a shared starter, 2 main courses, coffee and more than a bottle of wine the total bill was only €61 which we thought excellent value.
What may be perceived as a problem is that we had no idea of cost until the bill came as no prices had been advised throughout.
When we left after 9:30pm there were still customers waiting for tables which must surely be one of the ever best recommendations.

Had seen this little gem on tripadvisor and so glad we made the effort to find it .. The place was packed and we managed to get the last table after which people were waiting for tables .. food was lovely .. I had paprika soup which was divine and then lamb shank beautifully cooked .. The atmosphere was great .. It is located in a side street but well worth searching for

Small quarters, but a great Dutch meal. Many of the diners were locals because the staff knew them. The meal was wholesome and great.

The initial thought of no menu was concerning, but when we got there the server did an excellent job of explaining our options. The food was top notch, best in Amsterdam!

Van Kerkwijk was recommended to us by a Dutch friend as a place to try genuine, well-prepared local food and to escape the tourist hordes. It delivered on both counts. Located down a rather unremarkable side street just off the Dam Square, it's easy to miss but well worth the wander.

The menu changes frequently (hence no written menu) and features local ingredients. The outdoor seating is traquil (along that small side street) but the interior of the restaurant is lively and bustling with what appeared to be a mostly-Dutch crowd.
