Description: “Haesje Claes” is a restaurant situated in the historical center of Amsterdam, between the Spui and the Dam square, across from the Amsterdam Museum. The restaurant occupies six, epic buildings, in which the original architectural features such as little steps, corridors and hallways all have been preserved. Likewise, the exterior of the building is a beautiful example of traditional Dutch architecture. All chambers are breathing a century old ambiance, perfectly suited for a comfortable and casual lunch or dinner. The name Haesje Claes originates from the Lady Haesje Claes, who was born in 1520, and was a daughter of a rich salesman. She was also the founder of the “Burgerweeshuis” (orphanage) formerly located in the Amsterdam Museum. The interior is comprised of paintings depicting scenes from the orphanage and many paintings and tiles in the restaurant date back to this time period. Our kitchen is open daily from 12:00 till 22:00

Had a lunch here at the weekend - this restaurant is old and full of small rooms with wood panelling. They're rather proud of the heritage of the place. There's a reasonably varied menu and we opted for a local style lunch dish called the stockpot. This was a large meatball and smoked sausage with pickles and mashed potato which has different vegetables added according to the season. Mine had a green it in it which is local and a cross between cabbage and spinach (can't remember the name). Very substantial and tasty, it's good honest and filling stuff at a very reasonable price. If you want fine dining there are nearby (and highly expensive) alternatives but this old place has lots of character and worth a try.

We visited Amsterdam in April and our hotel recommended this restaurant. After crossing several canals we found it and it was worth the short wait. The atmosphere was amazing, old world charm with carved wood everywhere (old, carved wood!) Staff was very pleasant and good. The food was excellent, my wife's salmon and my beef stew (eat with a fork) were some of the best dishes we have ever had. Prices were very reasonable. We loved the charm, service and food at this place and would highly recommend to anyone. Would advise making a reseveration.

Of the three Amsterdam restaurants (Haesje Claes, Long Pura, and Red) in which my wife and I had dinner during our 3-day stay in the city, this was by far the one we preferred. You'd be well advised to make a reservation (it did take me two emails to get a reservation response, so persevere if necessary), as the night we were there, there was not a table to spare, and hopeful diners, ones without reservations, were turned away throughout the evening. There seemed to be a lot of locals also having dinner at the restaurant (always a good sign), and the menu provided plenty of local specialties. The atmosphere and food were both very authentic, the service was good, and we enjoyed our evening there very much. The restaurant is housed on several floors; you can specify the particular room in which you'd like to dine, but the place is so busy that you'll be fortunate to get what you request. The restaurant has the added advantage of being on Spui, directly behind the Hotel Estherea (which is where we stayed), but it's central for most hotels.

We couldn't get a table last night so we went here for lunch today. Although it was 2pm the place was still heaving right through until 4pm when we left. Our waitress had been working there for 16 years and said it was always really busy but they coped because they had a strong team and knew how to work together - it showed!

Starters of finger portions of fish and meat were delicious, my wife's Dover sole was cooked perfectly, and I had the best horse steak I've ever eaten. The dessert was equally good. This is definitely a good place to go if you're looking for well cooked Dutch food.

Our Gate 1 Travel tour group was taken to Haesje Claes as part of an evening dinner/red light district tour. The Haesje Claes is a charming restaurant (not in red light district)--dark wood, antiques, etc.
My dinner started with a wonderful carpaccio, wife had pea/carrot soup; both of us had the Hodgepodge (a stew with sausage, meatball, bacon, potato, etc.)--quite tasty and a local dish. For dessert I had creme brulee, wife had a pancake w/ice cream & orange sauce. Both were wonderful.

Service was very attentive--even with 40 people. Although our dinners were included in the tour price, menu prices are very reasonable. A nice place to have dinner.
