I booked this as a birthday treat for my wife. Lots of helpful advice on what to eat and which wines to have with the meal, all provided in a very friendly and knowledgeable way without any of that unctuousness you sometimes get in “high-class” establishments. We settled on the Rive Gauche tasting menu which, with additional amusee bouches etc., came to around eight or nine courses (sorry I lost count). I am a picky eater but I have to admit to being blown away by the whole meal. The courses were all the right size, so one didn’t feel bloated at the end, and the pace of service between courses was spot on. As a final touch the plate on which the petit-fours came had “Happy Birthday” on it in chocolate – very thoughtful & much appreciated. This is an establishment which understands the value of “the little touches” and of getting them right. My wife, who has eaten in quite a few Michelin starred places, rates it the best meal she has ever had.
The view across the Amstel River is lovely seeing the various craft going to & fro and, in particular, watching the hotel’s own boats taking guests out onto the river with their meals and wine. Must try that next time! Lastly I must add a word about the restaurant itself. It is a lovely room with lots of wood and nice lighting all creating an atmosphere of calm and quality, heightening one’s expectation of an enjoyable time as you enter. We shall return!

It's a lovely restaurant in the Intercontinental Amstel hotel. The location is lovely as it faces the canal. The setting is like a large comfortable sitting room.
For a 'posh' hotel and Michelin star restaurant, the staff are very friendly and helpful without being obstrusive, and most importantly, not snobby, like a lot of waiters in famous ( perceived or not!) restaurants.
All the above merely compliments the food, which is SUPERB.
We chose the 6 course menu. The wine list is indeed extensive, and expensive but we took the wine pairing with each course, which was much more interesting and also a better deal.
They served us 3 amuse-bouche, and some delicious petit-fours at the end that was unusually presented. These were all lovely extras that was complimentary.
One should go to this restaurant with a good friend/ partner, or a few friends. You have to enjoy each other's company and conversation because the meal took over 4 hours! They really pace your course, so there is no rushing and if you don't enjoy the company it can be somewhat tedious! The 6 of us had a great time though. The cost is not anymore than other comparable restaurants and I would go back again if I were in Amsterdam again.

Majestic in every way. Including the price but worth every gilder. We both had separate six course chefs menu. With suggested wine pairings...in deed one of the best meals ever. The service probably the best anywhere. And, we have been around the world for over 50 years. The restaurant manager was attentive and extremely person and professional. We were there 4 1/2 hours never rushed always taken good care. A must for any gourmand.

La Rive is a wonderful restaurant...a magnificent experience. Whether you choose the 5 or 6 course tasting menu the food and the experience is a revelation. Lets start with the service, as fine as you'll experience. Wine list reads like a novel, full of good choices. Even if you think you won't like or don't eat certain choices go with the tasting. The food is that good. We had a marvelous experience.

La Rive is reputedly one of Amsterdam's long-standing fine dining restaurants complete with a Michelin one-star. The setting directly on the river is lovely and the room has a bit of classic elegance, That's the good news. Having requested a window table when we made our reservation, upon arrival we were told that all of the window tables were already taken. When we left two + hours later, the table by the window directly in front of us was still empty. The menu offers a limited number of selections-all rather conventional- including steak in about three different incarnations. This probably speaks to the clientele because, based on (only) one observation, the there were no locals (i.e., Dutch) in the restaurant and most of the quests seemed to be American. (Full disclosure: we are long-standing American ex-pats and it was Sunday night.) The service staff is effusively friendly and they love to expound upon the various dishes in great detail, yet when it comes to simple things they fall down. Having had both aperitifs and then white wines by the glass (both quite good) with the first course, we had to ask repeatedly for our red wine (Chateau Dauzac 2006) until it finally arrived after our main course was served (with no apologies or explanation). The food itself was decent, but not exceptional. We only had two courses (not being big eaters) and declined the five and six course recommendations. Nevertheless the bill for this rather mediocre performance was 413 Euros. I don't mind paying up, but you would expect a bit more from a restaurant of this calibre.
