Any Amsterdammer worth his salt will brag about the delicious Indonesian food that Amsterdam serves. Kantjil & de Tiger's servings are voortreffelijk!, they'd claim - and that is what got us here.
This perpetually crowded restaurant did whet our appetites. An elaborate meal and a burnt hole in the pocket later, we pondered whether it was really worth the time, money and effort -

~Food: mediocre at best, with each individual portion of the rijsttafel ranging from being moderately decent to barely palatable. I'd recommend you try the individual dishes rather than the full course rijsttafel

~Drinks: They serve palm beer on the tap- worth a couple of em to take the edge off

~Ambiance: For those who prefer a quiet dining experience, please carry your noise cancelling headphones; for those who are compulsive eavesdroppers, you're in for a treat

~Price: pricey pricey pricey - the final nail in the coffin.

Verdict: 2.5/5 - Overrated

Disclaimer- I am a vegetarian and an Indian - my benchmarks of good vegetarian food are quite high.

Dear Anand D,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are indeed a very busy restaurant with seats for 220 people. We are happy to welcome all of our guests. As you have noticed correctly, it can be very packed during prime hours. We are sorry to hear that the noise of all these people distracted you throughout your dinner.

For those who prefer a much more quite atmosphere, we are also open during lunch hours where you can sit back and relax in a less crowded ambiance.

We hope to welcome you again someday, maybe during our lunch at the New Asian Brasserie.

Kind regards,

Jessica Segal

We went on a weeknight in late November and the restaurant was pretty busy, although we were seated quickly. We both had Nasi Rames and they were really good. We were kind of bored with choices of food in Amsterdam for a few days, so we were very happy with this restaurant. Finally something different, and it was reasonably priced. A nasi rames dish and a drink cost about 20 euros.

Kantjil has always been one of my favorite rest. in Amsterdam for taste and value. For that reason I invited some of my friends to join me at Kantjil. Big disappointment however; actually the sauces , vegetables and rice were good but two of the meats were very disappointing. The sate ajam (chicken sate) was delicious but the beef of the beef rendang was very tough and the babi pangangs pork was very fatty. It was unlike Kantjil, maybe they have a new chef or meat buyer but it definitly needs improvement if they want me back.

Trying Indonesian rijstaffel is an absolute must while visiting Amstersdam. We had the vegetarian rijstaffel preview for lunch as they serve the elaborate rijstaffel only for dinner. This itself was plenty and had around 8 different dishes, lot of different vegetables and gravies and crackers served with a bowl of rice. The food was good and the experience was something novel and unexpected. One portion is more than eneough for 2 persons to share. The ambience was good and service decent better to make a reservation before going as it is quite popular.
