Loved this museum! Interesting yet fun!

Brilliant collection with just the right amount of information on each section!

The whole place was extremely well designed and thought out! Even the toilets had handbags set in the wall that lit up when you opened the door!

Everything was well cared for and felt like they were trying to give you that luxury experience. I had a cream tea in the coffee shop and felt it was reasonable at €6.50 for a high quality loose leaf tea and a yummy warm fresh scone with jam and clotted cream all displayed on a cute little stand!

I thought I would be round it quickly but I actually managed to spend around 2.5 hours there!

Brilliant and would recommend!

Although my husband and I have visited Amsterdam already many times, we had never been to this museum, because my husband (as so many others, apparently) never understood why women need handbags and, indeed, how we manage to cram so much into them.

Because entry was free with our museumcard, we thought we would give it a try, and we were pleasantly surprised with the extent and quality of the collection.

It was really interesting for both of us to see how many types of bags and purses have been thought up by mankind throughout the centuries and what the connection was between certain types of fashion and certain types of bags.

We also discovered that from the 17th century up until 1900 Dutch children used wooden bookbags which also doubled as writingdesks in school. (this exhibition about the history of schoolbags ended on 15th september 2013)

The museum is located in a historical building, and has a café with beautiful painted ceilings where you can get a coffee, a lunch or even high tea (although you have to make a reservation for that), and also has an interesting museumshop for the aficionados.
Depending on your level of interest, you can spend and hour or more in this museum.
Enjoy your visit !

We stopped by not expecting too much but were pleasantly surprised. They have a fascinating collection of the old, the not so old, the bizarre and the cool. Won't take more than an hour to go through the collection but an hour well spent especially if you have even a slight appreciation for fashion. Also has a nice cafe overlooking the gardens that is worth stopping at for some cake and tea :)

Very nice exhibiton of bags from the roman times ( perhaps even before that) until today. Even interesting for the husbands. Also a great museumshop where you can get the newest bags from modern designers and not for the prices the luxury brands are asking.

My wife thought I'd object to going to a museum of handbags, but this is a fascinating collection that covers centuries. The museum is privately owned by the family that assembled the collection; they've done a fabulous job displaying it in chronological order so you can see how the means of carrying things around has evolved over time. It's located in a 1664 canal house on the Herengracht.

The museum also has an excellent and moderately priced cafe overlooking the back garden, well worth a visit after seeing the collection. It also has a gift shop with handbags and related items that's worth checking out. I don't normally bother with most museum shops, but this one is different.
