“I'll be back!”
Reviewed August 13, 2009

This is a small and efficient hostel with a great location for the young budget traveler in Amsterdam. Very near to the train station, a grocery store, the Dam and the redlight district. Big rooms (20 beds), so noisy and bright, but what do you expect in an Amsterdam hostel? Hopefully not much sleep. Otherwise, the Aivengo is clean and calm. Love the mosaic decoration. Not much of a lobby but free internet. No breakfast.

Best of all the staff are fabulous! Fluent in several languages. They helped us decide how to make the most of our limited time in the city, gave us directions, stored luggage, took down messages for us, let us use the hostel phone and were generally charming and helpful. We made reservations to return but due to a missed train we never made it. The receptionist I contacted via email remembered us and willingly canceled the reservation even at such short notice. I will definitely stay at the Aivengo again.

I really enjoyed my stay at Aivengo Youth Hostel. The hostel is located just a 3 minute walk from the central station, and is close to coffee shops, restaurants and just a ten minute walk from the red light district.
The hostel offers two computers with free internet access and has a very friendly atmosphere.

The Aivengo Youth Hostel has only two rooms with 20 beds, 3 or 4 showers and about as many toilets. There is no real "bathroom", no kitchen (although there is a water boiler and a small fridge), and what I really did not like, was that there was no common room. That way you cannot really mingle with other guests, and not stay at the hotel too late, since there is always someone sleeping in the rooms. The room is quite big and spacious and has about 6 bunk beds, the rest are single beds.

Despite these things, I would surely recommend the hostel for a short stay in the Dam. You can rent lockers (i actually believe that they were free, but i'm not sure) and get great infos at reception. The staff was very helpful when we were there.

Its a 7 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal station and you dont have to take a boat so that is really convenient. We stayed in a 4 bed private ensuite room which was in another premises on the next street. The room was nice clean and big. The only problem was that there is no proper kitchen... just a small area with a microwave/ coffee maker. The reception staff was great... really friendly and accomodating!

I went with two friends for a weekend as we got cheap flights and wanted a cheap but central place to stay. The directions we were provided with were brilliant, only 5 mins walk from Dam Sqaure and Centraal Station, the location is central without being too rowdy. The staff on reception were always friendly and helpful, providing us with maps and advice on where to go and what to do. We stayed in the all girls dorm at the top of the building next door, a bit of a climb if you have suitcases but carrying backpacks was fine.
The room was airy and spacious, and even though the beds only have a single blanket it was still very warm. The room was lovely and clean, there is a kettle and fridge. There is only one shower between 12, which wasnt really a problem for us, and a separate toilet, which again wasnt really a problem.
The free internet in the hostel is also a bonus. The only drawback was no common room, which wasnt a problem for us as we had each other to talk to, but might be if you wanted to meet lots of people.
All in all, a brilliant hostel, cheap and cheerful, friendly staff, close to everything, and at £18 a night well worth it!

I stayed in Aivengo Youth Hostel by myself for 4 nights in a big female dorm that was actually in another building next to the main hostel. You had to climb up the narrow staircase to the top floor. The dorm was rather armylike but the view from the window was beautiful and justified the climbing! There was only one bathroom witch also had the shower in so sometimes you had to wait for a good while to get in. Otherwise no complains. Aivengo is a very basic and simple place to stay, no more, no less.

I went there by myself on july 07 it was a nice small hotel very easy to get to from the train station and with great friendly staff, I got to meet a couple people while I was there since there are like 20 beds in the same room but it was interesting.
Again the staff helped me to get around the area gave me a map and was able to visit the places I wanted to just by walking to all of them from the hotel

A group of 10 of us stayed in the private rooms (4, 4 and 2) which resulted in us staying in a seperate building from the main hostel which we had all to ourselves. The rooms were pretty clean, large but very basic. The mattress's (on bunkbeds) were extremely uncomfortable (metal springs!) and each person was provided with a small thin blanket each, leaving us all cold in the early hours. The rooms were over 3 levels with an extremely steep staircase in between the levels- pretty scary after a long night out! The bathrooms were clean and had fantastic showers. The hostel was pretty expensive for what you got, but that could just be Amsterdam prices...
