“Houseboats are cool!”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Family and friends who've visited AMS had strong recommendations to stay in a houseboat for the experience (the novelly of staying in one) and once my boyfriend found great reviews from here about Frederic Rentabike he decided to book it for 3 nights! We are glad to say that we had a very positive experience staying in a houseboat (exceeded just the novelty of staying in one) and will likely stay in one again when we visit AMS in the future!

We stayed in Houseboat IX and loved it! I absolutely loved the rustic feel of it. Don't expect this to be a 5-star hotel with modern amenities but this doesn't take away from the quaintness and home-like feel this place had to offer. It was very easy to feel comfortable and even feel like it was really your own space (I think this is very important when you're travelling). It was clean (my boyfriend can confirm, I'm a little bit of a clean freak and it definitely met my standards ;D), had ample storage space (even though my boyfriend was the only one to use it) and in general, was very spacious for two people. The boat had everything from kitchenware to a washer/dryer (though we didn't realize that it worked until I read from reviews here). The only thing to complain about (if that really!) is that there wasn't any internet access; however, I think it made my boyfriend and I talk to each other more about our day during the evening ;D.

We found that the location was absolutely awesome for all the stuff that we wanted to do and see. We walked everywhere and we found that being in this part of the Jordaan area was a great spot to be in to have access to a lot of great sights. Prinsengracht was in more of a residential area (though we were steps away from the Ann Frank house/museum) but had some great little sights to see too (i.e. the Noordermarkt, Westerkerk, etc.). There was something nice about walking back to our area at the end of the day. It was quiet and safe.

Marnie was very informative about the whole city and made great recommendations one being one of the best restaurants we ate at for the 23 days we spent in Europe...Balthazar's Keuken!

We stayed in houseboat II in the Jordaan area.
When we arrived, staff at Frederic's couldn't have been more helpful and gave us great recommendations of where to eat / drink as well as all the basics ie. supermarket, ATM etc.
Our houseboat was on a quiet canal, in a very safe area about 10 min walk from Centraal Station. The boat is essentially open plan with a very well equipped kitchen, living area and comfortable raised bed behind which were the shower & sink so giving some privacy from the main room. The toilet was separate. The boat had everything we needed and was very comfortable.
We highly recommend Frederic's for a good value, comfortable and great alternative to a hotel!

Boat IX. Just off from Anne Frank House, an ideal and lovely location. The houseboat is romantic EXCEPT that there is no really separate bedroom. All that you need is there, cooker, hot water, tv, dishwasher washer tumble dryer, but maybe not as modern as you might wish. The bath was enjoyed (once we figured how to turn on the hot water). We had happy relaxed family evenings on the foredeck or round the kitchen table open onto the canal, greeting passers by on the water and the sidestreet. Very good value too.

We spent two nights in Bennie & Nelly Mullers apartment on Haarlemerstraat which was rented to us via Frederic rent-a-bike. From the moment we arrived to the minute when we left we were made to feel very welcome by wonderful kind people who went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful stay in Amsterdam.
Firstly, we spent half an hour in the Frederic office where we were given a personal map with all the sights, restaurants, shops & bars marked on it specifically for us and all questions were answered. We were even allowed to leave our luggage here and get changed since it was only around 9am when we arrived and the room wasn't ready.
After a few hours walking round the beautiful city and having breakfast we went back and got our luggage and keys.
We then met the apartments owners, Nelly Muller who introduced us to her husband and football legend, Bennie Muller. Wonderful, kind and very hospitable people.
The apartment was very romantic with a lovely big open window with a street view. Bed was very comfortable and apartment was fully equipped with kitchen facilities and all you would need for a short break including coffee, tea, sugar, washing up liquid etc and some nice touches such as fresh oranges, flowers and luxury biscuits.
The beatiful large bath is up a step in the same studio and very romantic, perfect for us as we celebrated our first wedding anniversary here.
The stairs are admittedly a little steep, as with all the beautiful old buildings in Central Old Amsterdam, but this is a very minor issue to put up with.
The location of the apartment is very central, close to Centraal Station and walking distance to all the attractions in the city.
All in all a wonderful break in a very beautiful city, and made all the more special by the people we met. Heartfelt thanks to Bennie, Nelly and the team at Frederic Rent a Bike for the support you gave to myself and my wife during our stay. We will return, sooner rather than later!

Stayed 3 nights in the Chagall room with Frederic. It was a spacious room behind the office of Frederic. To come and go you had to walk through the office which helped us get to know Marne and his mom. When we arrived Marne outlined all there is to see and eat in Amsterdam. He gave great recommendations for eating options around the Jordaan district. The shop and rooms are located in the Jordaan district which was incredibly beautiful. The best neighbourhood in Amsterdam if you ask me. Easily within walking distance of the train station and Dam Square. To get to Reijksmuseum and Vondelpark area it would be a good idea to rent a bike from Frederic, $10 for the day I believe it was. This is a must. The room itself had a shared bathroom/shower with two of the other rooms however we never encountered any problems sharing. Inside the room they provide a kettle with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate which was great at night or in the morning. They also provide some croissants in the morning. Loved the area, loved the room. Great owners who really want you to enjoy your stay.

We needed accommodations for 5 adults---myself, my husband and three others in their early 20's and Frederic's was very accommodating and we were able to stay on the top floor of a canal house which we all loved. If you don't mind climbing stairs for a beautiful view and breeze it may be for you---not fancy. Simple basic----3 steep storied stairs to climb --attic apt with 2 spacious clean rooms/ sinks in both rooms/ water for tea and refrigerator/ bathroom on second floor/ The best was opening the windows to get breezes and see the activity along the canal and cafes's etc....an experience we would never get in a hotel. Five minute walk from Central station. The owners, Frederic and Marjolijn and Luwella met us and drew out on maps where to go to shop to eat and to bike---felt very much at home. Their bike shop was great with bikes that were well maintained by Olaf!!!! Will definately come again.

Reviews for these rentals are spot on. We learned that one ought book early to find a decent, reasonably priced space in Amsterdam. Frederic rents out available accommodations throughout the Joordan area, and his whole family pitches in to provide information and answer any questions. The places are with walking distance from Central Station and everything you'd want to see. Our fully equipped apartment worked well, if slightly more than we had hoped to pay.
