If you want to miss out on the arty-farty and touristy crowd at next door's Hoppe, go to De Zwart.
Amsterdam's meeting place for trendy people. Since even before my student days, many years ago, De Zwart has always been the cafe of choice for students or those claiming to be students and generally speaking the 'lefty population' of Amsterdam you'll find here. A typical Amsterdam cafe, nothing special, but with a great view of the Spui. Tables as it should be in Holland's traditional cafés, covered with a rug. Traditional watering hole with standard and fairly basic Dutch pub fare. Great place to while away an hour or so. First buy your paper or magazine at book and paper store Athenaeum, straight across. And keep your eyes open when crossing the little alleyway between Hoppe and De Zwart: the cyclists give no quarter!
