Hotel The Golden Bear
Ranked #308 of 371 Hotels in Amsterdam
Reviewed July 29, 2012

I just spent 4 days in Amsterdam with three nights stay at The Golden Bear! What a great place to stay at! The receptionists at the hotel were very nice and very helpful. My room was located at the very top of the hotel (3rd floor) and it was also at the back of the hotel so I heard no noise coming from the street. The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The bed was excellent, clean sheets, clean towels (every day if desire), and clean floors. (I mentioned this matters because another reviewer gave the hotel negatives on this aspects). The shared restroom and showers were on the second floor but there was never a problem trying to use them. I had perfect accommodations.

One of my favorite parts was the free breakfast because they served enough food to fill you up while visiting the city. In fact, I didn't had to have lunch at all, just a snack in the middle of the afternoon, which will keep me until dinner time.

When it comes to location, I found TGB to be in a perfect zone of the city. It is right in the center of all the hustle and bustle yet in a quiet street at the same time. Getting to the hotel is rather easy (one short Tram ride) and getting to some of the most interesting locations is even better (walking distance to the great Leidseplein), as well as to other places like Bloemenmark, the theatre district and it is surrounded by some of the most popular gay establishment, many on the same street.

When coming back to Amsterdam, I will definitely stay at THE GOLDEN BEAR HOTEL once again!!! And I highly recommend the hotel to everyone.

Room Tip: Room on the top floor and towards the back are quiet.

hotel golden bear, just arrived back from 2 days staying at the golden bear, good locaton, but the rooms let the hotel down, all the carpets or dirty, there was carpet tiles in my room,,which looked so dirty and stained, from years of use, the beds had nice fresh white sheets on,,but dont remove the the sheet that covers the matteres, as its so dirty,,to finish of i got loads of bites all over my back and legs from bed bugs,, for this reason i would never stay here again,, for the price we paid you would realy expect more,,
on the flip side the dining area was clean and the reception area was ok, and the staff were quiet friendly and helpfull,,the stairs or quiet steep (but this is normal),,i found the sheired toilet and shower clean,,,a little upgrade here and there would make all the difference,,(specialy the rooms)
i stayed in room 34, please be aware that the bed in this room is full of bed bugs,,,i am quiet an easy traveler, and know you get what you pay for,,and the hotel probably does not even know about this problem,,i hope they read this,,and change the dirty beds,,,as this totaly spoilt my stay,
for £70 pounds a night i did expect more.

Room Tip: rooms at the back of the hotel or quiet,,rooms at the front or noisy,,,if your a light sleeper try...

I stayed here again, and I will always find an excuse to stay here, because I love Amsterdam, and TGB is at the heart of the city. Everything you might enjoy is steps away from the door somwhen you feel the need for locomotion, younwon't have to go far.

The beds are comfortable, you can choose from en suite bath, in-room shower, or shared facilities. If you choose shared they are never far away. And always clean. Rooms are spacious and in this day and age, that is a god send ... room to walk around, a chair or two with room to extend your legs. What amazing little benefits we look for now in this age of minuscule rooms.

There is a breakfast included, and there is a Starbucks two minutes walk away for that coffee fix in the early morning.

Did I mention TGB is a gay hotel? Oh well. It is. But somaffordable. And worth the money ... but don't bring really big bags ... the stairs, as everywhere In Amsterdam, are very steep and narrow.

And I will return ... it is so close to everything!

Room Tip: If you want quiet, do not sleep on the street side. I really like #32, which is on the street side...

I would highly recommend staying at The Golden Bear. I stayed in a room with a wash basin (shared shower and toilet). The room was very clean, with provided sheets/towels and a kettle and coffee/tea supplies. The staff on reception were helpful and the breakfast was good too. The location is also excellent. One word of warning, the stairs up to the rooms are seriously steep.

A lovely little hotel, pretty no frills but I gave it five stars in every category because it was perfect for my needs - nice, comfortable rooms, relaxed and friendly staff and a great breakfast. Would definitely come back.
