“Excellent 4 star / weak 5 star”
Reviewed May 5, 2014 via mobile

Stayed for two nights in May; having booked in advance with the hotel.

Upgraded on arrival to a larger double room on the lower ground floor which sadly didn't offer a view. That said, with trees outside of the hotel a view could have been "hit or miss" anyhow.

Positives for the hotel are:

Location - 5 mins from the main railway station and tramlines

Housekeeping - rooms very clean and they offer a top up service later in the day for anything that you have run out of (tea, milk etc)

Spa - nice to have and easily accessible. A bit small and the steam room wasn't great but for an old building they have done well with the space.

Wifi - good signal throughout the hotel

Free mini bar - nicely stocked bar. You'd be doing well to polish it off each day!

Cons:

Noise in the morning from staff shuffling cleaning trollies woke us up both days.

Breakfast - was included in our room rate (or 25 euro pp) but really wasn't up to 5 star standard. Limited choice, all self service and understaffed. Really expected better here. As a minimum they should seat you (often there weren't enough clean tables for guests arriving) and serve tea / coffee.

Bedroom - only 6 coat hangers. Really need to sort that one out!

Bathroom - only two small hooks to hang two towels and two dressing gowns and nowhere for a hand towel. Bit silly but easily fixed.

Staff - after you check in you don't really see reception staff as it's in a separate room and the concierge desk was often unmanned

Overall, an expensive hotel that's not quite living up to the 5 star billing. It's very good but not exceptional and for the price there are other hotels that may be newer / better equipped. If they were to address the above then it'd stay here again but if not then elsewhere it is.

We stayed 1 night in a luxe superior room to celebrate our anniversary and we enjoyed it: warm welcome, superbe room with splendid view over Amsterdam, nice breakfast buffet, very good help from concierge regarding car, museum tickets,... It was great to enjoy luxury in this beautiful and well-situated hotel.

Stayed here in the old Shipping House which has been converted into the Grand Amrath for my mum's 70th birthday treat. We had a room on the ground floor looking out onto the main road, close to reception, it's was excellent. Lovely comfortable bed, great ensuite, complimentary well stocked mini bar, coffee machine & tea making facilities. I was initially concerned it may be noisy but thus was certainly not the case. I can't comment on the restaurant specifically as we had a tight sightseeing schedule so ate out in the city. We did have a treatment in the spa in the basement which was very good. Great small gym and swimming pool/steam room. It is worth walking up the main staircase to see the architecture & decoration from the time when this was the Shipping House which has been retained giving the place it's unique character. The staff here are very accommodating & helpful from the maids, concierge and reception team, nothing is too much trouble. There is also secure luggage storage for your use if you arrive ahead of check-in time (which we did) and wish to store luggage after check-in (which we did) to allow a bit more enjoyment of this fabulous city before going back to the airport. It made my mum's birthday very special. Thanks Grand Amrath

Unusual hotel but great location away from the madness of Amsterdam centre. Our package included breakfast, complimentary minibar and coffee. Location was perfect opposite the central station with good links to the airport. I would certainly recommend it for couples looking for a haven.

I got REALLY disappointed that time as it was a succession of jokes :

- the steam room was off the whole day so if you want to use , you better have half an hour to wait for the steam to be ready...

- i have asked them to join the 2 single beds to make a big one and what they have done is put double sheets on my bed for ME to put it on the single beds...had to call back for them to send someone to do it. Could not be bothered to ask for a proper king bed. It s ok its only a 5 stars hotel....

- i was feeling sick during the evening ( i am.allergic to dust) and realized that the room was incredibly dusty (see picture attached), but as it was very late had to clean it myself to be able to sleep.

- after waking up sick ..( looked like depressed person ! with my block nose, wet eyes and big throat ) i went to check out, explained the receptionist and showed a picture and all i got is wait for the "manager" ( who came 15 mns later ) for her to say "sorry about that [...] Do you want me to charge the card you gave for check in ? [...] hope to see again ..."

So very bad experience this time , waste of time and money OUTRAGEOUS and so 'cheap behavior' for such a 5 star hotel

First off I am a big architectural and history buff so staying at the Grand Hotel Amrath in Amsterdam was a must for me. I have to say it did not disappoint in any area.
The hotel started out as an office building for a group of shipping companies in Amsterdam. It was started in 1912 by Johan van der Mey in the Art Nouveau style. This must have been a showcase in Europe for office buildings. The iron work, brick work, glass work and design are simply extraordinary! When it was later converted to a hotel it kept all the craftsmanship that was loving giving this gem. The hotel does feel a bit strange at times and doesn't always feel like a hotel - so keep in mind this was born as an office building and you will understand the unusual layout.
Explore this hotel, walk the floors, look up, walk around the outside. This is a gem, this is not a cookie cutter hotel. There are so many treasures to find here. Each time I came back to the hotel I took time getting to my room to explore and see a new detail that I missed the time before. The zodiac windows were my favorite.
Now as a hotel the service is top rate. The staff here is quick to help and make your desires come true. They were pleasant and cheerful at all times. The hotel also has a wonderful spa and swimming pool - rare in Amsterdam.
The rooms comes with a FREE mini bar, let me say that again - you get a FREE mini bar in the room! Breakfast is included and it's delicious. There is turn down service every night.
The location is great, it's on a quiet canal near Central Station and if you come in by train like I did you can walk to the hotel.
My room was large and spacious. I had a huge ceiling! I was in the interior part of the hotel and I had no view, but I had plenty of light. I loved the big bathroom. I also loved that the curtains were on a electric switch and I could open and close with a touch of a button!
This is a rare gem. It has become my favorite hotel and look forward to coming back for another visit soon!

This hotel is a quirky in its layout, but grand. The room was huge, high ceilings and lots of square footage. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable. The shower has really hot water and great showerhead settings. Complementary toiletries were of high quality.

The complentary mini bar served us very well. It had wine, beer, liquor, sodas, water, a selection of coffee/tea, and a small bag of snack product. It was replenished everyday, maybe twice a day.

The spa was a great way to relax between morning and evening outings. There's a heated pool, hot tub, and saunas.
