“Another great stay in the Amrath”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

I returned to my Favourite hotel in August.

As usual the room was totally perfect, the bed gives a wonderful night sleep

The hotel had an offer on Breakfast which took the price down to a reasonable amount, well below the 25 euro basic. The quality of the Breakfast range is overwhelming, only odd spot being the chicken sausages.

I enjoy returning to this spectacular hotel every trip, knowing that I will have a pleasant stay with friendly, helpful staff to make each stay a truly wonderful experience.

No hesitation in recommending this hotel for a top class stay

We booked this hotel as a package deal with expedia for 5 nights stay at the Grand Amrath with return flights from Manchester with a 40% discount. We paid £698 altogether. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk away from Centraal Station, very easy and accessible to find.

Checking in was pretty straight forward, although a deposit of 200 euros was expected which was not explained or mentioned at any point. I don't own a credit card, so a 300 euro deposit was needed on my debit card but I had just over £200 in my account. The reception said 200 euro would be fine and it would take between 2-10 days to be put back into my account. But I'm annoyed that I wasn't told about this as the money in my account was a back up plan if anything went wrong.

Nonetheless, my room was stunning. Big high ceilings, the bathroom was lovely and pretty spacious. The bed was the comfiest ive ever slept on, and the bigger sized pillows I was hugging and jumping on the bed and lying there in absolute awe at how comfy they were. I slept like that every night. Never experienced comfort like it. My room did get rather stuffy from time to time and having the window open all night did attract noise from guests in the corridors quite early on in the morning. And also the rooms did get rather dark at night time, as the lighting really wasnt suffiecient enough to brighten the room at all.

There is plenty storage in the wardrobes for clothes, I could of needed maybe a few more hangers but folded up on the shelves was fine for me. Used the TV maybe once or twice before bed. Adequate enough TV. Hair dryer was really good and powerful, the hotel room I stayed in did have a normal 3 pin UK plug so a EU travel adapter was not needed.

The Mini bar is free and gets stocked up daily, the mini bar consists of 2x bottles of coke, diet coke, sprite, fizzy water, normal water, tonic water, a selction of spirits such as whiskey, vodka, gin and bacardi etc. A bottle of white/red wine. The mini bar really did save us quite alot of money and came in so handy each day. Had no trouble with the room being cleaned everyday and the mini bar being stocked up. Shower gels/shampoos/mini bar were all replaced without any asking to have it done.
Nespresso machine was an added bonus with 3 different strength coffees to taste. Probably going to buy one for myself now.

I didn't use the spa treatments, but the swimming pool was a pretty decent size, we did sneak down in the early hours of the morning to use it as its only open from certain times and the man said it was okay to use it for half hour or so. Jacuzzi and steam baths were standard, could of been a touch hotter in temperature though.

Do not use the newsagents near the Grand Amrath, they overcharge a ridiculous amount, 2.50 euro kit kat chunky, 2 euro for a can of pop, 12 euro for 6 little stubby amstels etc. Ask the concierge where the closest supermarket is and they will show you on the map. The 6 amstels were 3.91 euro from the supermarket.

Overall, I don't think the Grand Amrath is a 5 star hotel. I have had such an enjoyable stay here, its a fantastic location, stunning historic charm to it, free mini bar is fantastic, I would certainly come back but I don't think id pay the full amount for how much the rooms cost without the discount we received. Its not quite a full 5 star hotel for the money you the money they expect for the rooms.

By any standards, this is a great hotel! Excellent accommodation, well located, great staff and something I have never encountered before in more than forty years of travel- a free mini-bar!
From the minute you arrive you can experience the differences, You are invited in to the office and given a seat whilst the check-in activities are completed. The hotel was once the headquarters for a Dutch shipping conglomerate and is lavishly presented with ornate marble and wrought iron work that would cost a fortune today.
Our room looked out directly on to a lovely canal and had fully opening window, really pleasant. Just a short walk to Central station and the tram depot and many eating houses

My husband and I loved this hotel! Very nice departure from the chain hotels. Large, historic, with spacious rooms and very friendly staff. Our room was huge by Europe standards! The location is perfect for those who want to explore Amsterdam - 2 blocks from Central Station, on a canal, 3 blocks to Red Light District and easy walking distance to non-touristy areas. In some areas, the carpet/decor was a bit worn, but it did not detract from our experience at all. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast is expensive at 25 euro per person, but it is worth the money. The bed was also very comfortable!! I highly recommend this hotel!

Myself and my husband stayed in Amsterdam for 3 nights at this hotel and we loved it! The location is perfect; easy to get to from the train station (5 minute walk), quiet location but easy walking distance to all main attractions. The staff were lovely and very accomodating, allowing us to leave the bags there when we arrived before check-in and after we had checked out (flights were very early on arrival and late on depature). Room was very clean and staff came in the morning to clean it and then knocked on later in the day in case you needed anything else (fresh towels, etc). Didn't have the breakfast so we couldn't comment on it. Seemed a bit pricey at 25euros, especially when there are cafes around that are much cheaper. However, the spa facilities were free and were very clean and well-kept. And there was also a complementary mini bar which is restocked daily - a nice added bonus! All in all, a beautiful building with nice canal views, nice staff and in an excellent location. We certainly recommend it and would stay here again!

This is our second stay at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam over the last three years. The twice daily restocked mini bar, excellent concierge, and room service all make this hotel truly top notch. The architecture is uniquely beautiful, and you could really spend an entire day just exploring the hotel. Do not miss the wellness center; the steam room and saunas (there are three) can't be beat. Be sure to take advantage of the concierge; we had them twice arrange drivers for us at a price much lower than what we would have paid on our own, and we had excellent adventures both of those days.

The rooms themselves are wild and extremely comfortable. The beds are so comfortable that it is sometimes difficult to get over jet lag because all you want to do is sleep. The pillows are the largest and fluffiest I've ever experienced, and I'm hoping to buy some for my bed at home. The rooms are quite spacious by European standards and come equipped with a trouser press, robes, slippers, a wide range of high quality toiletries, mini bar, nespresso machine with tea and coffee, and some popcorn. The windows are gigantic, so be sure to get a city view. The wallpaper is wild, and the curtains are remote controlled.

The location can't be beat. It is right across the street from Central Station, so getting there from the airport is a mere 6 euro train ride, and excursions to all over the city are very easy and inexpensive. It's also within a five minute walk of the red light district, meaning you're far enough to not have noise problems, but close enough to be a bit of a tourist yourself. There are also several excellent restaurants just a few blocks away, and it's right in the heart of all of the coffee and smart shops.

Be sure to try the breakfast buffet for only 19.50 euro, or the french breakfast in the cafe for only 13.50!

Room Tip: The windows are huge, so paying a little extra for the city view is certainly worth it.

We booked 2 rooms for 2 nights through Easytobook which was the surprise hotel, and the price was about 30% lower than the cheapest rate we could find on the internet. We were very surprised with the good value for money we got. We arrived 13h00 and one room was already available. The other one was ready half an hour later, which was great as check in is normally only from 14h00. The minibar was free and was filled up the next morning, and there was a good selection of drinks in it. We didn;t have breakfast at the hotel as we found the breakfast room too dark and the price was quite steep. We went opposite of the hotel to the top floor of the library, where there is a La Place located. The view is stunning and the food was good and very cheap.
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom spacious. Nice toiletries (Rituals).
The room had a Nespresso Machine which was a nice added bonus. Our rooms were located at the back side of the hotel, which overlooks the canals.
The hotel is a 10-minute walk of the train station.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the canal side; the rooms on the front are located right next to the main road (Pr...
