“For young red light district revellers who want basic, cheap and secure accommodation.”
Reviewed January 1, 2011

Hotel Ben is aimed at young travellers/ revellers (mainly groups of lads) for the red light district who want basic, cheap, secure and private accommodation, something more than a hostel but at a similar price and are going to use the hotel as a base during the late hours, not staying there for anything in particular but a nap. If you’re not in Amsterdam for this then you’ll be hugely disappointed.

Externally the hotel looks very commercial and I’m sorry to say this cheap so it does fit into the red light district area. The reception area is simple with just the desk, Red Bull drink machines, a pamphlet stand and a few chairs. The resident cat that’s always milling around the reception must be the owners and adds an element of quirkiness you don’t get from other hotels in such a built up area.

Rooms are accessible over several floors from the main steep stairs you get in many traditional narrow Amsterdam properties (if you cannot climb many steep stairs this hotel is not for you). Smaller corridors lead off from the main stairs to rooms. The rooms at Hotel Ben are without a doubt the most basic of rooms I’ve ever stayed in (almost prison cell like); they are small, narrow but long and feature cheap beds (thin mattresses), blankets (no duvets!), plain décor, an open wardrobe (well it’s a box really), 14” box colour television, small round table, stools and an en-suite with very hot water. The floors are uneven and in the middle of summer very very very hot and sweaty (no air conditioning), after the first night we had to buy fans to cool ourselves off, even then it didn’t do the trick. The location of the hotel right in the heart of the red light district (and I mean right in the heart with bars and sex shops outside the bedroom window bellow) this means that between 6pm – 3am sound levels of drunken people outside on the street bellow resonate throughout the hotel and unless you’re drunk or very tired, it does take a while to get some sleep.

In general the hotel caters especially for the budget traveller and people on a red light district trip. It is not suitable for any other age or type of guest, especially children based upon its location. The location is right in the middle of the centre so at no distance to bars, clubs, restaurants and museums, whilst guests are required to hand their key in exchange for a card saying they are staying at the hotel when you leave for the day (so guests don’t lose keys). I won’t be staying here again as I would pay more for a hotel with better facilities that is a little quieter.

Stayed here for 2 nights with some friends in May 2010.

Hotel was in a great location, right next to the Red Light District and only a few doors down from the Grasshopper.

Basic and clean rooms. Ours was on the top floor which was accessed by some extremely steep stairs.

Amsterdam isn’t cheap to stay in but the rate here was probably about right considering its Amsterdam.

Overall, a no frills hotel that does exactly what it says on the tin and was just right as somewhere to lay our heads after a couple of days/nights heavy partying.

Hotel was in fanstatic location, near the pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops and not too far from other attactions too. Approx 5-10 min walk from Central Station. Rooms were basic and clean (to an extent) however a bit of damp on the ceiling and smelt a bit musty. Decor is poor. Main complaint was that the walls were so thin and you could hear everything from the room next door, 5 lads high on pot (or whatever else they had) doing kung foo kicks during the night (funny at first but not a few hours later), also our room was situated at the back of the hotel which backs onto the main street which became very noisy at night. It is ok if your staying out until the early hours but on the last night we had to go to sleep earlier because of early flight and the noise was too loud. I have now stayed at a 1star hotel, cheap and pay for what you get but don't think I would go back to this hotel.

OK, so from the photos and website we knew what we were getting ourselves in for when we booked this hotel. We actually used bookings.com instead of Expedia this time but had great service from them too.

The hotel is right in the centre of town which is great and we had a friendly man at check-in. When we actually got to the room though on the second floor we decided to check back out. The room stank of cigarette smoke and was right over an alley way. The bed was made with clean sheets and looked fine but there was blood/ faeces smeared on the wall ( we argued over what it might be). The stairs are a health hazard, steep and in need of repair. There are no fire extinguishers on any of the floors, just old fire hoses. Given the fact that most of the people staying there are smokers, it's of some concern. If you're here to smoked copious amounts of weed and are 20 years old with no $$ it's probably OK but really walk around and find something else.

Only stayed here once, the room was fairly small 3 beds crammed in to the room with little room for much else, but that's all we needed. For the price it's good, bang in the centre of everything and a parrot is there to welcome you on check in. Only 10 minutes(maybe even less) walk from Central Station, taxi rank is one minute walk away, less than five minute walk to the red light district and countless coffeeshops around it. One word of caution though, the Church bells are pretty loud in the morning, but it's bearable and actually got us out of the hotel before 10am every morning.

we payed just over £100 for 3 nights so wernt expecting anything, in fact slightly concerned. most of the reviews are spot on, steep stairs, rubbish shower ect, ect, but for the absolutley amazing location and the cheap price i would recomend it to anyone whoe's going to the dam for a good time and just need a place to crash or a base. for my stag weekend it was perfect, dont rekon i would take the mrs there for romantic weekend though!

We have just spent Valantines weekend in Dam and the Hotel Ben. Romantic it was not but for £80 TOTAL for 2 nights we were hardly expecting the Ritz!!

Firstly, i would agree with previous reports about the stairs, they are ridiculous but so is every other building in the city, its part of Amsterdam's charm so put up with it or pay another 100 quid for a hotel with a lift!

Yes the bells from the church are loud and frequent but if you stay anywhere else within a half mile radius you will still hear them and after a proper night/day out on the lash, bells will be the last thing you're worried about!

The guy on reception when we first arrived was really friendly (as was the lovely cat sarah!) he had our booking there waiting-we couldnt check in till 12 but he kept our bags - we came back at about 1140 and they let us go into the room no probs, all we had to leave at reception was a 10E deposit for our key - didnt have pay anything for the TV remote.

The rooms are very basic, the bed is not that comfy and no, there are no complimentery toileteries BUT the sheets and towels were clean, the heating was toasty and the shower pumped out hot water (from our private bathroom which is another great plus!) Our room overlooked the next street with pubs and various XXX shops but we didnt find this disturbing or noisy more entertaining than anything!

Overall, we would not bring our 1 year old here or my Mum for that matter but if you are a young couple or group of friends that just want to mash it up for a few days and be right in the very heart of the action and pay very little then the Hotel Ben is definetly for you! If we ever go back then I wouldnt hesitate to book it again!

Just one more note - totally unrelated to the hotel - Amsterdam has become VERY expensive since the last time i went (2006) We thought 250 quid would do us for 3 days - WRONG, we ended up doing in nearly 600! Expect to pay around 12-15 euro for 2 drinks (nothing extravagent just a pint of heineken or magners) and about 10-15 euro for a burger meal...Check out Belushi's Bar behind the hotel for good deals on beer/shots...ENJOY! x x
