after reading all the bad reviews about this place i was so surprised when i got there!!
i went with three of the girls and we all just wanted a place to put our heads....
we got in reception was grand, clean and relaxed. there was loads of stairs really narrow and crooked!! but the rooms where clean, had a small tv, a window that opens... (and you could smoke) !! the room was crooked so that was a bit weird!! bath room was ok clean... shower was clean but kept going hot and cold!!! really relaxed place to stay in... would reccomend it to anyone whos young and just there for a few days!

Stayed here in June 2011 for 3 nights and what a nightmare this hotel is. Had to climb 75 very steep steps to our room which was very basic. The beds were something from the second world war ,we actually witnessed the maintenance team make them from old wooden boards! My friend ended with flea bites to his body from lying on the bed . The carpet was filthy but if you stay here you will NOT get any sleep. The church bells ring non stop from 6am ! Very disappointed with this hotel.

I have never stayed somewhere as horrific as this before. And i wouldn't be too high maintenance. We knew that the price and location were an indication of a poor quality hotel, but this was something else entirely. The place is disgusting. The people in reception were unpleasant, the stairs is as steep as in the Anne frank house, and there are cat doors everywhere to allow the mangy cat free access to all parts of the hotel. The room itself was the dirtiest i have ever seen, a tiny bed, carpet crawling with dirt, and no air unless you opened the window, which would then give any maniac the opportunity to climb in. We checked out after just one night on the incredibly uncomfortable mattresses and mentioned our unhappiness to the staff who instead of offering any kind of an apology, told us what we were saying was "bulls**t".

Stayed for 3 nights. Got to the hotel too early to check in. So left bags with man behind counter. When returned couple hours later bags were in exact same position with nobody looking after them from reception anyone could have walked in and grabbed them. We were given a key for room 227 top floor nightmare. Walked in to the all I could smell was sick, it made me want to go home. But decided to go get some cleaning products to clean all the very suspicious stains (blood, excrement, god knows what else). After room was clean the smell of sick still lingered so had to have the window open the whole time we were there. Even on the day of leaving it still smelt of sick, or something had died in there. The carpet was disgusting didn't even take shoes off. On the plus side the bathroom was fairly clean. The price is cheap so wasn't expecting anything great but better than what was waiting for us. Don't stay here at all costs or you will be disappointed or cleaning the room like us.

the location is perfect, literally 1 street away from the red light district but on a street which also has a large church therefore pleasantly quiet. on a boring uneventful street in the city centre, seconds walk to sex shops, coffee shops and a canal. check area has vending machines. remote needed a €10 deposit. we had a quad room, had no bedside lockers and was a little small but perfectly comfortable, clean and acceptable (and im fussy!) we were told we could smoke in the rooms but had to sit next to window which we never did, we panned out n bed and never set off any alarms. had an ensuite - small/pokey but at least it was clean! the 4 of us had 1 room key which we were never allowed to take out of building. we had to leave it at reception when we arrived and used little business type room cards we displayed to get back in any time. the stairs are steep and theres loads of them, they are steep and theres lots of them lol dont recall ever seeing any other guests even though the building had many rooms. you get what you pay for. its cheap, very cheap but surprisingly secure, clean and enjoyable! can be walked to from central station in less than 10minutes and easily found.

Hotel Ben is aimed at young travellers/ revellers (mainly groups of lads) for the red light district who want basic, cheap, secure and private accommodation, something more than a hostel but at a similar price and are going to use the hotel as a base during the late hours, not staying there for anything in particular but a nap. If you’re not in Amsterdam for this then you’ll be hugely disappointed.

Externally the hotel looks very commercial and I’m sorry to say this cheap so it does fit into the red light district area. The reception area is simple with just the desk, Red Bull drink machines, a pamphlet stand and a few chairs. The resident cat that’s always milling around the reception must be the owners and adds an element of quirkiness you don’t get from other hotels in such a built up area.

Rooms are accessible over several floors from the main steep stairs you get in many traditional narrow Amsterdam properties (if you cannot climb many steep stairs this hotel is not for you). Smaller corridors lead off from the main stairs to rooms. The rooms at Hotel Ben are without a doubt the most basic of rooms I’ve ever stayed in (almost prison cell like); they are small, narrow but long and feature cheap beds (thin mattresses), blankets (no duvets!), plain décor, an open wardrobe (well it’s a box really), 14” box colour television, small round table, stools and an en-suite with very hot water. The floors are uneven and in the middle of summer very very very hot and sweaty (no air conditioning), after the first night we had to buy fans to cool ourselves off, even then it didn’t do the trick. The location of the hotel right in the heart of the red light district (and I mean right in the heart with bars and sex shops outside the bedroom window bellow) this means that between 6pm – 3am sound levels of drunken people outside on the street bellow resonate throughout the hotel and unless you’re drunk or very tired, it does take a while to get some sleep.

In general the hotel caters especially for the budget traveller and people on a red light district trip. It is not suitable for any other age or type of guest, especially children based upon its location. The location is right in the middle of the centre so at no distance to bars, clubs, restaurants and museums, whilst guests are required to hand their key in exchange for a card saying they are staying at the hotel when you leave for the day (so guests don’t lose keys). I won’t be staying here again as I would pay more for a hotel with better facilities that is a little quieter.

Stayed here for 2 nights with some friends in May 2010.

Hotel was in a great location, right next to the Red Light District and only a few doors down from the Grasshopper.

Basic and clean rooms. Ours was on the top floor which was accessed by some extremely steep stairs.

Amsterdam isn’t cheap to stay in but the rate here was probably about right considering its Amsterdam.

Overall, a no frills hotel that does exactly what it says on the tin and was just right as somewhere to lay our heads after a couple of days/nights heavy partying.
