“Quirky host, good selection of drinks, nice interior”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

It's all in the title. Had a few jenever on the terrasse of this bar after an awful day. The host was friendly and obviously on good terms with some of the clients, the interior of the bar is a delight to behold, all in all well worth collapsing into both for the drinks, the host and the general atmosphere of the place. If I lived in Amsterdam this would be my bar of predilection, seemed to be in safe and knowledgeable hands here.

“A little Gem!”
Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

A colleague took me here whilst I was on business in Amsterdam and what a find.
It is the smallest bar in Amsterdam and dates back to The 1790's and it has been in the same family all that time.
My wife came over for the weekend and we spent some very chilled nights in the bar.

It's packed with 12 people in it though!

“Great find off the beaten track”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

We visited this bar on recommendation from a Dutch couple we met in Amsterdam in 2003.
I was going through my old pictures and decided to share via Tripadvisor.
Well worth the visit great atmosphere , and hasn't been cleaned for years.

My kind of pub ...

“Difficult to find but well worth the effort”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

This tiny bar is tucke awayin a small side street a few streets south of Dam Square. Diificult to find but weel worth the effort. The bare and saeting area is very clean and hygenic but the ornaments on the walls and suspended from the ceiling have not been dusted for 30 years (at least) giving the place a gothic look. The barman is very freindly and his wife's family have been running the bar since it opened in 1798!

The toilets are up a very small spiral stair case not to be scaled after too many beers.

“The Smallest Cafe in Amsterdam”
Reviewed March 2, 2012

This is one of my most favorite cafes in Amsterdam. Drenched in tradition, with the Beems family running the place since the late 1700's. Very small, but so gezellig (cozy), with limited terras seating out front as well. The decor seems to have not been changed much since the 1700's, just added onto, absolutely worth the visit just to see, even if you don't drink. They do serve up a wonderful steak and salad, and there is a good drink selection; Brand bier, nice jenevers (try the Van Wees 3 jaar), also several malt whiskeys. Jazz music is always playing, and really makes for the perfect ambiance. On my visits I usually chat with Jan the barkeep for an hour or so, completely unpretentious. This is a place that you can, and will want to spend a lot of time at. Especially on those rainy Amsterdam afternoons, a must visit.
