“Most convenient hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

Stayed here for 2 nights before I boarded the cruise. This hotel is situated just next to the cruise terminal. Moreover free shuttle is provided from hotel to Central station and return every 1/2 hourly. It's good to register with conceirge in advance. The room is big and clean. Nice view from room window. Breakfast and room price is on the high side but worth the convenience if you are taking the cruise.

Room Tip: Take the higher floor if you want a nice view.

The biggest issue is the Moevenpick is a long way from Amsterdam's "action" if you're there on vacation. The tram to Central Station is only 3 minutes away from the hotel where you can change trams to reach your destination. We did the tram as well as walk. You'll be told there's a tram station in front of the hotel or take a free hotel shuttle to Central Station. It's a long walk to the tram in front of the hotel: Down a flight of stairs then up another flight (this is the short cut), across a busy bike path (bikes have the right of way, not the pedestrian), then cross a major business street, and finally 3 lines of rail tracks or you can walk several hundred yards to avoid the steps portion. We tried the hotel shuttle but were told it only runs every hour. All that was annoying but we dealt with it.
We were in an executive room on the top (20th) floor with a fantastic view. The room was too warm and after asking for someone to look at the AC three times I asked for the manager who told me they have eco "climate control" (code for there's a limit to how cool you can make the room). We had trouble sleeping due to being too warm. The manager offered to move us to the other side of the building (same floor) but we decided it was too much of a hassle and only had 2 days left.
The tub/shower door guard was coated in mold. I pointed this out to the manager and the next morning a technician came by and removed the moldy guard and replaced it with a new one but didn't clean the mold attached to the bottom of the glass.
Next issue, there aren't any drawers to put your clothing. Loads of space to hang clothes and luggage space though. I managed to move things around and created 3 cubby holes in the refrigerator and safe wall unit.
The staff wasn't very friendly and who ever the concierge was we never found out. We had to ask around to find out any information.
The morning buffet (purchased) was not very good and I wouldn't recommend it. ... Other than the home made bread (delicious), the rest was not up to par, but loads of everything they had.
On the plus side the Moevenpick is one of the only newer hotels and is in much better shape than a lot of the centrally located hotels plus a better dollar value. The excutive room had a nice size refrigerator stocked daily with complimentary bottled water, 2 beers, 2 soft drinks. The executive hospitality room (included in the room price) had water, beer and "snacks." ... (the snacks were fried and didn't look appealing).
I probably would check out other hotels if in Amsterdam again. But you have to be careful that the hotel of choice has been refurbished recently.
We stayed here for 4 days because Amsterdam was our destination after a Viking cruise. The hotel was recommended by Viking and appeared convenient from what we had read.
I have to give it just average for it's category.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the 20th floor during the summer unless you're cold natured. These rooms tend to...

Dear Karen W,
Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed and extensive review with us.
We hope your Viking Boat Cruise has been a pleasant one. Reading your comments we sincerely regret not to have met up to your expectations. We are indeed not in the middle of the city center, but well connected by all means of local transport and our own free shuttle service (each 30 minutes, advance booking recommended). We apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered by the warm weather.
All remarks have been shared within our teams for follow up.

We were told this hotel had easy access to the Central Train Terminal and thence the city center. This was very far from the truth (and far from the station). The tram that stops across a busy dual carriageway and up a long ramp from the hotel only goes as far as the train station (or the eastern suburbs in the other direction). Once you get to the station you have to cross a wide plaza trying to find the location of the tramline or Metro you need. I should mention that Amsterdam has a lot of rain making this activity even more unpleasant. The Movenpick itself is a bit like a train depot. They note in the room that the standard service is to change the sheets every other day. Shampoo and conditioner are for Executive Rooms only. The lobby shop does not sell Tylenol or similar such 'drugs'. You have to make the trip to the train station for the nearest apothecary.

If you can take 15-18 minutes of walk from the Central Station, this the most luxurious hotel for the money you spend. Alternatively, you can call the concierge and get a free from the central station to the hotel. This hotel runs free shuttle from the Central Station to the Hotel every 30 minutes (you need to call ahead). Another alternative - Just outside the Central station - Take Tram 26 - the first station is just opposite to the Hotel. The room, furniture, bathroom etc. all are modern and of high standard. From the room on both sides, you can enjoy the canal - the coming and going of the ships (including Cruise ships). This hotel caters cruise ship passengers, so it may sometimes comes across as a bit crowded, but the management and staff are very efficient. You won't feel it. The room service is very good and efficient. The bar serves special dishes on each day of the week (with a glass of good wine), and charges around Euro 19. This is a good price in Amsterdam and consider the service you get from them. I strongly recommend this hotel for travelers. If you buy day tickets or I am Amsterdam ticket, then any travel on bus / tram is free. You can come and go any time starting with tram 26.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a prebooked Viking River Cruise vacation. it was listed as city centre which it was not. For people with difficulties walking, it was a hike to get to the tram which was sort of across the canal and up a hill and a transfer at central station onto another tram to get to the "real" city centre. Checkin was very slow and as we arrived at 8am we had our bags chained up in a back inside driveway until 3pm when we got our rooms. We are two single (widowed, divorced) females and were booked in as Mr. and Mrs. with a king bed, which led to a lot of hilarity on the rest of our trip when we told the story.
The room had a view of central station and train tracks and a small canal (no big deal because every room in Amsterdam likely views a canal) the room was spacious and quiet. a room with a river view would have been nicer.
the restaurant was OK but very overpriced (bfst buffet was $24 if you were paying up front) our breakfasts were included in the Viking prebooked option. We ended up eating there at dinner instead of trekking all the way back via 2 trams to the more interesting places to eat. Dinners were acceptible but not worth the price. There was NOTHING nearby worth seeing and NO restaurant options. Central station itself is a wonderful place to sit and people watch. Everything leaves from there, trains, trams, canal cruises, bikes. speaking of bikes there is a rather spectacular bike rental outfit right in front of the hotel if you wanted to risk your life cycling in Amsterdam.

Room Tip: ask for one on a higher floor facing the river for a lovely sunset and view

Dear zinka69,
Thank you for staying in our hotel and for sharing your experiences with us regarding your stay.
We are indeed, as you well indicate, just outside the busy city centre, offering quiet and spacious rooms. In case you prefer not to walk we ofefr a free shuttle bus which drops you close to the Central Station. An advance booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
We regret to hear we did not completely meet up to your expectations, but hope to have another chance to welcome you back in our hotel.

Very nice hotel close to the central station, easy to reach the city centre on foot (10 minutes) or by tram (5 minutes). The room was spacious and clean with a lovely view and a nice bathroom. We especially enjoyed the quiet and calm location away from the busy city centre. Staff were all helpful and pleasant. We stayed 4 nights and would probably go back there when we return to Amsterdam.

On the first day our room was not properly cleaned (glasses not washed, toilet not cleaned, toiletries not replaced, etc.), but not a problem the following 3 days.

Cons: breakfast very expensive (about 25 euros per person!!!), and only 4 hours of free wifi.

Little niggles: we booked the complimentary transport to the central station on the day we left. We were initially pleasantly surprised that this was offered by the hotel, but we were then dropped off only halfway to the station and still needed to cross several busy roads to get to the station with our luggage.

Overall we had a lovely relaxing stay, the room was great, but several minor things made the stay not quite perfect.

Room Tip: Rooms with views over the river Ij are fantastic, but rooms to the side of the hotel also include vi...

Dear Joanna3285,
We are pleased to read your stay in general has been an enjoyable one. Thank you for your positive remarks regarding our good overall facilities, lovely views and helpful staff.
Our sincere apologies for the cleanliness of your room, this has our highest attention.
You may be intereststed to know, you may prebook your breakfast at a cheaper rate or book it via the online Travel Agencies included. We noted your remarks regarding the drop off of our shuttle bus. Due to constructions at the Central Station area we are not able to drop you at the back side.
Unfortunately this is not in our hands, but hopefully in a near future this will change.

We hope you will stay with us again in the future and make your stay a pleasant one.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel as the end of a wonderful river cruise. This hotel is convenient for the cruise ships; however, it is not convenient to City Center, unless you like walking through an unknown area with construction or know how to use the tram immediately (not helpful for newcomers). The area is not attractive or lively (almost desolate). There are not many restaurants in this area of the city. We found one--Jamie Oliver's Fifteen.
The staff at reception was friendly and welcoming. The overall appearance of this hotel is tired and dull. I guess it is a contemporary design; however, it could use brightening and lightening. Our room was spacious but seemed unclean (cracker crumbs on the windowsill). The bed was comfortable and the shower stall was large.
Breakfast buffet was fine and had variety. On the second night we decided to eat in the hotel due to a hard rainstorm. We went to the bar for a drink before dinner. Due to additional cruise tours, the upstairs restaurant could not accommodate us until 9:00 pm. The very hard-working bartender called for us and said no tables until 9:00 pm. We chose to eat at the bar (basically the same menu). Good choice--more ambiance and better atmosphere. Our dinner came quickly (fish and chips).
Checkout was easy-- a very pleasant young man at the front desk.
Overall--the hotel served its purpose but lacked in convenient location for city activities.

Room Tip: Outside views are industrial (although you can see water) so don't worry about room location. W...
