“super local's bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2011

Hard to add what other recent reviews have said except to agree with their comments. Beer brewed on the premises is great and cheap too. Sit ting at the bar and people watch with a glass of Struis is just sublime.

Good beer and under the only windmill in Amsterdam. Worth the bus ride.

“Great tour of a brewery where beer is really good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

My husband and I went to this brewery because we heard that they did free tours on Friday's at 4pm. I wanted to see a windmill up close and this place offered both. We arrived early to avoid the lines and guarantee we got in on the tour and the place was pretty desolate. We decided to go to the bar next door which had lovely couches outside to sit on and have a beer or two. Very close to 4pm the windmill brewery started to come alive. The servers bought out bar stool chairs to go with the high tops outside. The doors opened right at 4pm to the flowing beer taps inside. We grabbed a seat at the bar which was very bright and airy. Lots of windows to let in light and many pictures on the walls and hundreds of empty beer bottles to see different kinds of Dutch beers and beers from other places. The server was super friendly as busy as she was serving the crowd of people. There is a chalkboard on the wall describing the types of beers brewing that day and the alcohol content as well. Not long after ordering a beer, someone from the brewery came out to let the large group know that the tour would soon be starting. After a quick trip downstairs to the bathroom, we all went into the brew room to see how it all happens. We smelled the hops and barley and became somewhat educated on the brewing process. It was a very nice tour and it was really FREE. Check it our for some really great beer.

“deeply dutch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

we went on a saturday afternoon, when this pub had the feel of very much a locals joint, but one which was friendly to visitors. the home brewed beer is really good, you get to pass time in the shadow of the windmill and with some good snacks incl boiled eggs (if i have understood this right, the river 'ij' sounds the same in dutch as the word for egg 'ei', so they play on this, having an ostrich egg on the beermats aswell). didnt bother with the tour, but the pub itself is highly recommended if you are the sort of person who likes some time just slip by whilst on holiday, watching everyday life going on.

“Nice place to see - but not the top thing to do in Amsterdam!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

I wanted to go to this place because to my knowledge this is the only windmill within Amsterdam itself. We didn't go to the actual brewery but sat in the cafe next to it. It is located at a bit of a noisy street, but we still enjoyed sitting "underneath" the windmill and just experiencing something a bit different. Also, we took the tram there from town center which was easy to do. So if you don't want to be stuck in museums all day and want to venture out from town center, I suggest to hop on a tram and have a couple of beers at the pub.
