A much better idea for families than a cramped hotel room. The houseboat has the added attraction of being able to feed the canal birds from the window and wave at passing tourists. Peter welcomed us to the boat and was helpful with suggestions of what was available nearby. We enjoyed a day at Artis zoo and a day at Nemo which are both fantastic places for family days out. We were also glad that we went to the Van Gogh Museum on a Friday when it is open late as it meant we had more time. We booked tickets for the Anne Frank Museum online so avoided the queue. The double bed on the boat is the biggest I've ever seen. It would easily sleep two adults and one child - maybe even two small ones! But there is always the sofa bed too which I gather was very comfortable and there was plenty of bedding. Thanks Peter!

My friend and I stayed on the houseboat for a week in November 2010. It was great to have the privacy of a house and we really enjoyed the comfy bed. The location is perfect, close to everything from restaurants to museums. It is close to the Marqt as well so we could get groceries. Also a short walk to Rembrandtplein and the winter wonderland for ice skating and gluhwein!

close to all you feel like you are a local. 5 minutes to shopping street have stayed here
four times and just booked for another two weeks in 2011. Peter the host is always adding new touches to make his guests more comfortable. Sitting behind the big windows watching the canal traffic while reading or doing e-mail is a pleasant break from sightseeing.

We had an absolute fabulous stay at The Prinsenboat. Being on the most beautiful canal of Amsterdam we were really in the middle of everything. We experienced how the locals passed by with their little boats. Some really extravagant.
All the interesting sites were in walking distance.
The kids loved everything! And the swans and ducks passing by asking to be fed....

I rented the boat for my sister and her friends so they could experience Queen's day on the Prinsengracht, always a unique experience. Peter is a really nice guy and easy to deal with. The boat is on a perfect spot in Amsterdam, very near Waterlooplein, the Carre, the Hermitage, Rembrandtsplein and Museum square. Nothing is every really far, but I like this area because it's just enough outside of the main "tourist" zone. Great restaurants and bars are very close. Everything you need is on the boat: microwave, free wifi, tv, stereo, bathroom with decent sized shower. I am definitely recommending it to other friends that come to visit (I live in Amsterdam).

We stayed on the Prinsenboat for a couple of nights in October. Like all other reviewers we found it to be a great experience. Peter, the owner was easy to deal with. He doesn't take credit cards so we paid a deposit with Paypal and the rest in cash on arrival. You'll probably find a bottle of wine to welcome you. Peter is very relaxed about checkout time if he doesn't have someone coming in immediately so we could leave our bags there until the early evening of the day we were leaving.

Amsterdam houseboats seem to come in a couple of flavours; those that look like boats and those that look like an apartment built on a hull. Prinsenboat is like an apartment built on a hull. It is comfortable and clean with lots of hot water. It has wi-fi but you need to bring your own laptop. It sleeps four, two in a large double bed and two on a sofa bed. There is a TV and stereo but little need to use them. There is much more room than a hotel but there is no room service or restaurant. That last isn't a problem however because the location is so great.

Basically the Prinsenboat is on the intersection of Utrechtstraat and the Prinsengracht canal. It is on the No 4 tram route to the station (although that was diverted while we were there) and the Stop and Go bus that runs from Waterlooplein along Prinzengracht to the station.

There are a number and variety of restaurants within 100 metres of Prinsenboat including a very good Indonesian that we ate at called Coffee and Jazz. There are also a couple of brown cafes for breakfast, lunch etc. One of them is called Ooievaar (which I think means Stork?) and they do a great burger. This isn't a very touristy area and the cafes and restaurants are mainly frequented by locals.

The Van Gogh and Rijks are a 10 - 15 minute walk, Leidesplein is less that 10 minutes, the Heineken brewery is maybe 7 minutes, Albert Cuyp market is 5 minutes walk, the Anne Frank Museum and Jordaan are just a ride on the Stop and Go and the station is half a dozen stops on the tram and it's maybe 3 or 4 stops to the Flower Market and Dam Square.

It's hard to get a room in the centre of Amsterdam for less than 100 euros a night and even if you could, the reviews of those places would make you think twice or three times about staying there! The Prinsenboat is very good value for money.

Husband travels to Amsterdam on business often. We had an opportunity to go as a family back in April 08. Meaning myself and two small children. Very worried about staying in a hotel (one room) with all of us. So we searched for an alternative. We found the Prinsenboat on a B&B search site and contacted the owner ourselves. He was incredibly accommodating. He had no worries about our children and even provided a crib for our daughter. It was clean and had all the modern amenities. I was a little worried about rocking (as I get seasick) but you could barely feel it. My children thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Watching the boats and ducks go by was a great past time. Because of the kitchen we didn't have to worry about feeding picky eaters every meal. The bed in the master bedroom is one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on and it's huge! It was within walking distance to most everything, restaurants, albert cyp market, many playgrounds. It was an ideal situation for us.
My husband and I returned alone for our anniversary in Oct 08. It was very private and romantic.
