Review of De Bijenkorf

De Bijenkorf

After experiencing a luggage malfunction (thank you Heathrow baggage handlers!), I had to quickly buy a new suitcase in Amsterdam recently. I was referred to De Bijenkorf department store and report I had excellent help from a very patient assistant in the luggage department who found me a good case at a reasonable price.
I never cease to be amazed at the excellent English spoken by the people in Amsterdam .... and without any apparent resentment at having to do so to help ignorant travelers!!!

The shop is quite something, be aware that some things can be bought cheaper elsewhere. However, the restaurant at the top sells some great food at good prices. We watched while a chef cooked our chinese in front of us. It was a good sized portion and tasted lovely. Whether you want a coffee and a snack or full meal it will be found up here. Also it was pretty quiet too, not like the hustle and bustle in other highstreet eateries.
Also, it gets a mention in Anne Frank's diary.

First of all, this is world class department store with luxury goods and five star service. The store reminiscent of long time ago Marshall Field's in Chicago. It is located in the City center, right on the Dam Square.

The well known secrets to the locals is that the top floor has is an excellent, upscale food court, with high quality and variety of foods...cold and hot dishes. The various stations serve salads, sandwiches, soups, hot dishes of meat and fish, deserts, teas, coffees, etc. The dishes are "restaurant" style in preparation and size. Service is professional and totally accommodating. Prices, for the type and quality of food, are very very reasonable.

Various seating areas are comfortable, conversation friendly for leisurely or quick meal. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, tea time, etc. are served during store operating hours. Most of the clientele are locals.

In addition to this main food area, there corner Caffe on the ground floor.

Good luxury shopping, you can find everything here. Spend a couple of hours to buy LV or Gucci.
Nice cafe on the roof, don't miss it.

The Bijenkorf in Amsterdam is the largest Bijenkorf in the Netherlands. They are selling very expensive luxury brands in small shops within the Bijenkorf at the ground floor, like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc. The top floor has a restaurant where it's full most of the time. You can really spend hours in here to look at everything.
