The nicest hotel in Amsterdam. Clean and stylish rooms, super nice staff, good food and a nice hotel bar. The beds are extremely large and comfortable. The hotel is next to the tram stop going to the city center. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone going to Amsterdam. It's not the cheapest but it is the nicest and clean.

I was suggested this hotel as it was close to the office that I work for as a consultant.

The hotel is located a couple of minutes from the tram stops and is convenient if your visit is not strictly pleasure. It is convenient to get to the center of the city. However, if one is here for fun and tourism then it will be good to check into hotels closer to the activities one likes.

This hotel is expensive (as most things are in Europe) and does not offer much in room comfort, Room prices are based on what one would like to have, I suggest that one checks the options provided in the hotel website. The hotel menu is priced reasonably and the staffs are nice and friendly.

There is a super market across the road and a couple of cafes, that adds to convenience as well as allowing one to wander around and experience additional choices.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with a view towards the tram stations. The entrance to the hotel is on the opposite si...

Innovative design and renovation of a historic building. The bed was extremely large and comfortable. The restaurant was good, and the staff was so helpful and friendly. The staff suggested we buy tram tickets, and we were able to easily get around Amsterdam by tram. The hotel room had the most unusual use of space of any hotel room I have ever seen. It was fascinating design. It's a fascinating hotel, great staff, good restaurant, and excellent value for the money. i would stay again.

Room Tip: I had a three star room and the bed was extremely comfortable.

Awarding a hotel an avreage three stars and then giving the review the title above seems contradictory, but let me explain...

The building was built as an emigrant hotel for (poor) families emigrating to America over a century ago. In WW2 it was used as a prison for opponents of the Nazi occupation. Afterwards it served as a youth detention center before being left a derelict haunt for itinerant artists. Ten years ago Amsterdam started regenerating its eastern docklands and sold this building to the current owners to renovate and turn into a hotel and "cultural embassy" for the Netherlands. They completely renovated the building under direction of some artists, trying to save as much as possible of the earlier decorations.

Bottom line: no two rooms are even remotely similar and combine a century's worth of styles. This goes further than just the paint on the wall or decorations, it extends to fittings like toilet, bath or wardrobes. My room had no wardrobe but fully enclosed bath/shower and toilet - in the middle of the room. My neighbour had a bath that was completely open to one side of his room. Another had a room that consisted of wardrobe-like doors that opened to allow access to bed, door, toilet or shower. That immediately gives a red flag for those who really want particular creature comforts. If you do, this hotel may not be for you. If you just want a good bed in a non-standard non-crappy furnishing, it might be exactly what you want.

I loved it. My colleague next door hated it. My main reason not to judge it higher is simply the unpredictability of it all. Mileage may vary - but if you hate monotony and don't mind the risk, by all means take it.

Room Tip: Impossible to say in advance. But staff is friendly and will happily let you change rooms if you rea...

Wonderful experience in this former prison, beautifully re-done. The biggest bathtubs ever so ensure you have someone to share it with-). Renovation of this old building was wonderfully thought out and walking up the central staircase feels partly in prison and partly in a modern art gallery.

Could use a gym albeit, great spot for runs along the water.
The spacious grand restaurant was great to work, eat and drink from.
Took about 20min to get to meetings in central Amsterdam.

Would definitely visit again!

A hotel with lot of history and unique rooms. My room (3 stars) was at the 6th floor, with dark old fashion inclined cealing and beautiful view to IJhavn. The bed was awesome. The corridors are quite ascetic, but they are just left the way they have always been and because of that they are indeed part of the whole experience.

Stayed 1* and great for the price in Amsterdam.
Artistic interior, with installations from previous resident artists scattered around The renovation of this old building is architecturally well thought out and walking up the central staircase feels as if in a cutting edge modern art gallery.
However, the beds are very narrow even for a slim person. We pushed them together to make a comfortable double for 2. I wouldn't sleep in one of them alone though as it is hard to turn over without falling out!
Would highly recommend, had a great stay on a budget.
