I have been to Chicanos during a crowded night in July. It is a very touristy restaurant just a few steps from Leidseplein, so it is understandable that the atmosphere is not the most authentic.
You are able to choose from 3 different menus of 3 different restaurants (and cousines), which is quite convenient if you are in a group and can't agree on a single pick.
We ordered meat dishes and they were tasty and nice! The service was good enough, with a big plus given by the fact that the waiters speak different languages.
The prices are reasonable and - if you can't afford anything fancier - it is actually a good pick.

Absolutely awful restaurant! Suckered in by the price tag... I cannot express enough how bad this place was. We have just left Amsterdam and have arrived in Prague, we eat there 2 days ago. Guys on the street getting you in were so rude behind people's backs. The service was non existent. Food ok, but the wait time was atrocious. "Unlimited ribs" don't really exist, had to wait over 35 minutes for the second portion, by then I'd heard so many rude comments about passers by and the experience overall we had to leave. The ribs came out with our bill! Very odd! I decided to use the toilet before I left and that was the nail in the coffin. No soap, dirty, grimey and absolutely revolting! PLEASE, PLEASE GENUINELY STAY AWAY.

My fiancé and I decided to go to Chicanos after walking through the leidzeplein. The service was non existent and took ages for us to receive our order . It took almost an 1 hour for us to get an order of ribs and enchiladas. This is one of the worst restaurants, we have ever eaten and the worst in Amsterdam. After anxiously waiting an hour for the food, my chicken enchilada consisted of dry unflavored boiled chicken covered in a hard flour tortilla . The salsa that was suppose to be on top of the enchilada was barely there and tasted sour and old. The rice was uncooked ,hard and unflavored. I have to say the beans were the worst bit. The beans were hard and cold. My fiances ribs almost came with no meat and no sauce. Once we had complained about the service and food, we were only offered a pitiful sorry . I would advise tourists walking around the area to avoid this restaurant .

it was late, we were hungry, we'd run the gauntlet of food pimps in the alley behind the leidseplein and finally plunked down at a wonky table at the edge of chicano's. As we waited an inordinately long time for the plate of fajitas, we munched on the their version of nachos (bottom of the bag broken doritos with pots of decent guacamole & something more like thai sweet chili sauce but called salsa.... the fajitas came sizzling hot, lots of peppers and onions and tender seared steak. Much too much for the miserable pair of cold tortillas cowering on the plate with some cheese. As we ate, the food pimp hustled customers next to us while we were deafened by an accordion busker who seemed to want to be paid to leave....33 euro for this 'meal'

the most plain tasting watered down nastiest meal Iv ever had with the worse service. Also we waited nearly an hour for our food and the only reason we went in there was because we was starving! and the promotor/man with the pony tail encouraging people to come inside was so sweet and friendly
