Just returned from a long weekend at this hotel.
We travel extensively and have stayed at quiet a few 5* hotels over the years, including some top properties. 5* hotels can be a bit 'boring and pretentious' but that is completely the opposite of what we experienced here. Being young people, we just loved the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Art'otel.
Check inn : We arrived close to 2pm and unfortunately the room wasn't ready. Even though we were offered a twin room for immediate check inn, we decided to wait for the king room that we booked. Not a big deal because the room was ready 30min later and waiting in the lobby wasn't really a problem for us as there is free wifi and tons of interesting art/architecture books to read in. The very friendly receptionist also showed us around the hotel to kill the waiting time. A nice touch! Speaking about staff, all the staff we met were very professional and friendly, but without the stuffiness that we have experienced at some other luxury hotels. From the porters to the receptionists to the breakfast staff, we always felt that we were 'in good hands'.
The room: We stayed in room 3025 and had a view onto the courtyard of the hotel and we were very happy with what we got. A spacious room, with a half open bathroom (that is more or less the norm in hotels these days), a kingsize bed (2m x 2m) with a memory foam topper and all the extras you could want (including an Illy coffee maker). And not to forget an airconditioner that acually worked (very welcome when it is 34°C outside!). It was hard to believe that we were in the middle of a busy city because it was as quiet as anything! Unfortunately both of us slept bad during the 2 nights we were there, but I guess a bed is a very personal thing (even though I am used to sleeping on a memory foam bed at home). Nice Elemis toiletries and turndown service at night. Everything was clean too.
The hotel itself: If you like art and design, like we do, you will love the place, it really is an 'experience hotel' and behind every corner there are other interesting features to be found with loads of quirky details and humor. They clearly want to make a difference from what most other 5* hotels offer/do and it certainly worked for us! An example: during breakfast most of the staff members were dressed in 'their own' clothes and not afraid of showing their tattoos or personality, opposed to the sometimes boring uniforms that are worn by hotel staff members in other hotels. It just created that 'friendly, young city vibe' that makes this hotel so different.
Speaking about the breakfast: It was perfect for us, while the variety was maybe not as huge as we have seen in other hotels, the quality was perfect and I think that the a la carte system works well, they did lovely scrambled eggs (opposed to the often rubbery powdered eggs that many other hotels serve), nice bacon, lovely suasage etc. The buffet items were also replenished all the time (they had lovely croissants, fresh fruits, lovely cheese 'chunks', nice quality ham etc., you definitely wont't leave hungry!). Fresh orange juice and nice coffee was served at your table. The restaurant were the breakfast was served is also very cosy and we really enjoyed our time there!
Facilities : The pool was quiet nice, and the sauna huge, the nice thing is that these facilities are open 24hrs (even though the staff has to open the door if you want to go late). We decided to have a swim at 11:30pm on saturday night and we had the place to ourselves (even though the sauna was switched off, who wants to go in a sauna when it feels like a sauna outside??). One remark : we went to the sauna/pool twice and there were never any clean towels available, which was a bit annoying because we had to put on our bathrobes, being completely wet from swimming... all the way back to our room. Wifi in the hotel was available everywhere and it worked well and was reasonably fast. Without any annoying log in pages, just connect-and-surf. Well done!!
Location: Right opposite the central station, maybe not the most 'posh' location for some people, we like it because it is close to everywhere (Amsterdam is not that big), always lively and easy to connect to public transport. We also love Asian food and the nicest Asian restaurants in the city happen to be in this area so it is perfect for us :-))
We hope to return in the nearby future and if you are looking for a top hotel that is slightly different from the 'standard, dull 5* city hotel' you will love it as much as we did!
