“You have to see it to believe it!”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

The Old Sailor Pub sticks out in the Red Light area of Amsterdam for two obvious reasons:-

1: The Exterior:

The highly varnished wooden exterior and seating coupled with an impressive pub sign at a popular crossroads makes this pub very difficult to miss and the throng of customers both inside and outside the pub has to be seen to be believed.

This is a drinking pub in the true sense of the word, which makes it an obvious pull for Brits amongst the sea of Cafes in the area.

At night, this place is rammed – inside and out and is great fun!

2: The Gents:

The toilets are identified by the cartoon characters Popeye and Olive so no matter the level of one’s intoxication choosing the correct facility to use cannot be simpler!

For us Gents be prepared for what has to be the most shocking site in Amsterdam – and that’s saying something!

The Gents consist of ONE facility for ONE person a time with no lock on a door that opens directly into the bar area [so be prepared for everyone within view to be able to vote on your performance!]

Once inside three walls are covered in what appears to be ‘easy to hose down’ metal sheeting giving the impression of a tightly fitted but functional shower cubicle one might find on a merchant ship.

In the same manner as a functional shower cubicle, there is a metal plate across the floor on which there are two footplates which provide the customer with some degree of guidance as to where to position oneself so as to have the best chance of making use of the hole in the floor!

There is a grill of sorts over the hole so there is some protection from ‘putting one’s foot in it’ so to speak for reasons I won’t go into here.

The beer was fine; the prices very reasonable indeed [a massive plus] and the atmosphere was excellent but there is absolutely no way that the Gents could possibly serve a function beyond that of being for the Comedy value!

“I liked this place”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

It's a great to have a drink and people watch. You can drink your beers outside as long as you are sitting on the bench in front. It's right in the middle of the red light district so the bar and streets always have a lot of people. It doesn't take long to get your beers, however, I got served very quickly each time. Also, a great place to meet a lot of people. Just sitting outside I talked to people from all over. I recommend this place.

“cheap beer.”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

This was the best bar we frequented in amsterdam! Better drink prices than the other local bars.
5 euros for a big amstel. Great bar for sitting and watching the characters of the rld go by!
Only negative was that the gents toilet is a bit strange!

“An absolute bargain!”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

So the first drinks of the night were at a bar 2 streets away from the old sailor. 1 beer and one cocktail cost 22 euro! Pretty standard amsterdam prices really..... however, 2 big beers and 2 shots of jager were only 14 euro in this pub! The old sailor is a bargin. Swift service, good product range (ladies you should try the rose beer!) and great location for a break from window shopping. Definitely worth a visit.
