Owner description: The Black Heritage Amsterdam Tour is about the 'hidden histories' of the African Diaspora from the 17th century to the present and is for everyone who is interested in learning more. We travel throughout the city canals on-board a classic canal boat as we explore the history visible in the landmarks, architecture, canal houses and art. The full tour includes a visit to a national museum, and much more. We offer regular tour every Sunday at 12:00 & private group tours Monday - Saturday.

This tour is absolutely amazing! We not only had a canal tour in a beautiful vintage canal boat, but we also learned about the black experience in Amsterdam and the role of the slave trade and the colonies in the wealth of Amsterdam and its merchants. The tour guides have meticulously researched the history of the sites and give an interesting and lively presentation. Our tour included visits to two canal house museums and ended at the very moving National Slave Monument (other Black Heritage tours include the Maritime Museum and a Dutch East India Company [VOC] cargo/slave ship—which we saw separately but which are also very interesting). The tour guides are friendly, engaging and helpful. We had an enjoyable and educational afternoon and walked away with a new perspective on Amsterdam. I enthusiastically recommend this tour.

Another way of looking at Amsterdam and the wealth gathered in the so-called Golden century. A short walk and a boatride take you along some spots that are connected with Amsterdam as a place where slave trading was important for the economy. But...it's the guides like jennifer that make the story come alive. Don't expect a biased narrative , everything is explained carefully and historically sound. And listen ! There are not really a lot of sites where the suffering of the slavery heritage becomes visible, mostly you will be looking at the opulant homes of some of the traders and the remains of the old factories dealing with products from the new world. so the combination of a good and interesting story with a pleasant boatride make this an excursion for people that have a specific interest in this dark period of the Dutch history.

This tour was very informative and inspiring. The vintage boat was beautiful and the story of the history of the Netherlands was confronting, but very much needed.

We went on the Black History Tour with collegues as part of our staff excursion. It is a really great trip if you are interested in the (black) history of amsterdam and like exploring the canals from a different perspective. Jennifer is a very enthousiastic and intelligent speaker. Having having done her fair share of digging into the history of slavery in the Netherlands she really knows what she's talking about. This besides her own personal attachment to the history, which does not clowd her judgement. Very interesting and fun too, for both Amsterdammers and tourists who want to know more about the city's past.

Black Heritage Amsterdam tours delves into the history and narratives of the African Diaspora that have been absent from historical tours in general in Amsterdam. The tour guide, Ms. Jennifer Tosch, has created an agenda that covers an astounding amount of information regarding the African Diaspora narrative as it relates to Dutch society from the 16th century to the present. She is continually adding information to the program as new discoveries come to light.

Another positive attribute is this canal trip has an actual tour guide and isn't the usual automated video recording one has to suffer through on most canal trips. You have a guide where questions may be asked and are encouraged.

I enjoyed the trip as a lone traveler and as a person interested in diversity, but I could easily see this tour attractive to schools and universities due to its well-research historical content; And of course, any individual or group that is interested in the Black Heritage that is part of Dutch history will enjoy the attention to detail. The tour is well-informed.

Additionally, as far as canal boat rides go, and I've been on my fair share when I have friends visiting Amsterdam, this was by far the most comfortable of trips. Provided along with the wealth of information was a wide range of snacks and drinks. It was also nice to have a W.C. on board and exceedingly comfortable seats. Both a pleasure to have on a canal trip.

Overall, a must do when visiting the Netherlands, in my book.
