Hiring a bike to cycle around Amsterdam really is a must and these were great. It was €10 per bike for 24 hours as we got 3, although we didn't use them for the whole time, which we thought was fantastic value. We used the bikes to travel up to the Jordaan, down to Vondelpark and over to Rembrandt's house among other sights. It was thoroughly enjoyable and the city is full of bikes with cycle lanes make it easy to travel about. Only problem with Amsterdam is that it sometimes seemed a bit chaotic with bikes. Some people ignored lights, others followed and others just kind of barged past, but all in all it was a great experience.

I cycle back home in London and it's usually mayhem, with very little respect of even acknowledgement from the motorists around me. Not to mention the infrastructure for cyclists is awful.

This isn't the case in Amsterdam, cycling is deep in their culture. Every major road has a dedicated cycling lane (none of this after thought rubbish in the UK), and motorists are very generous with their fellow 2 wheeled road users.

Originally we were going to use Black Bike hire across the street as recommended by our hostel, however they required a credit card. As I don't even own a credit card they totally lost our custom. Green budget bikes just required a 50 euro deposit per bike and your passport - much easier.

We went with the Dutch bikes - meaning there's no handbrakes - fear not though as they're fixed gear and back pedalling becomes your new brakes very quickly. The bikes themselves are quite cumbersome, but they're still a great way of getting around the city, we must have covered a good 20km- all for 6.50 euros!

Thank Ben L
