This time we decided to rent a flat for a LNG week end in Amsterdam and we found this great place along the canal close to our place . Very friendly staff and elegant design . Food was ok but I think the whole experience was very positive and we had a great evening

On a recent trip to Amsterdam a friend and I happened to wander past Wannemakers and went back for a second look. We hadn't booked. just turned up on a wet Wednesday night. The service was fantastic and the meal was the best I've had in a long while. All in all a great evening. Highly recommended.

Had dinner with a colleague at Wannemakers this past weekend. The restaurant was busy when we arrived (had reservations) and we shown a table by the entry to the kitchen even though a table at the front of the restaurant was available. Only after asking if there was another table available were we shown the table in the front.

The staff was very helpful and always available, which was essential as the menu is only printed in Dutch. No english translation is available. The lack of an english translation made the meal selection a bit challenging.

For the starters, a salad and steak tartare were selected. Overall these were prepared nicely. The wine selection was a bit limited but a Malbec was recommended, which was very nice. One main was the salmon, which was served with sauerkraut which was a bit unusual but not bad. The other main dish was duck breast, which unfortunately was seriously undercooked. The skin was very dark (almost burned), but the inside was raw.

Overall the experience was disappointing based upon the earlier reviews.

In terms of ambiance, I would consider this restaurant as rustic and not really romantic.

We booked Wannemakers based on reviews and we weren't disappointed. The two guys that run front of house have an excellent way with guests, they were both welcoming & engaging.

The restaurant has more of a bar feel to it than a restaurant but its very welcoming and the decor (especially the ceiling lights) is very nice.

As the menu is only in Dutch, they brought us through the menu in detail and gave honest recommendations.

For starters, we chose the crab and the cauliflower soup. The soup was excellent and cooked perfectly.

For mains, we chose steak and scallops. The steak was a little tough but the scallops in vanilla jus were super.

We shared one desert (apple pie / cheesecake) and it was excellent. One desert between two would be sufficient.

For wines, the waiter offered us a selection of both red and white to go with our respective dishes which was a nice approach.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening with good food and great service.

Went back twice since my first visit in Summer 2013. The guys of Wannamaker are at it in terms of hospitality and cooking. They are keen to please but have a capability to leave you alone as well, a slichtly rare combination in Holland. Get them to fix you up with a catered boat trip next time you're in a wealthy group of 6-12. The game did not disappoint. Highest marks for the red cabbage.
