I've enjoyed many trips to Korea and the culinary highlight of each trip was the famed Korean BBQ: bulgogi and kalbi on a grill set into the table. The meat is served raw and it's left to the customer to grill, slice and serve; a truly social dining experience. If you like meat, and smoke, and good times, then I recommend an evening of Korean BBQ wherever you an find it.
Unfortunately, Amsterdam (or the whole of the Netherlands for that matter) has been lacking a true Korean BBQ restaurant. There are several places that offer delicious, authentic Korean dining, but not real BBQ. Yokiyo has finally filled this gap! With authentic table grills, drinks and spices imported from the source, Yokiyo offers an introduction to the Korean social food experience in Amsterdam.
The staff is very helpful and friendly. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. Just give it a try and you'll be back for more.
I recommend skipping the appetizers and other dishes and going straight for the BBQ. Order a bottle of soju (distilled from sweet potatoes) and a bottle of Cas bier to get things rolling. Then move on to two or three different meats, including kalbi and bulgogi. Drink, grill and enjoy.
A word to the Korean connoisseur: if you're looking for authentic flavors, go elsewhere. Yokiyo has toned down the red pepper and garlic to appeal to the European palette. This place is all about the meat, the grill, the laughter and the ambience. On these topics the other Korean restaurants in Holland could learn a thing or two from Yokiyo.
