“Great Hotel”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

We have just returned from a three night break in Amsterdam staying at the Holiday Inn. I found the hotel fantastic, the staff were so friendly, helpful and professional and spoke multi languages, the room was spacious, very clean and modern and fresh towels were provided every day. I agree the hotel is out of the central area however I found this to be a positive, it was nice to return to a quiet area. The metro and tram stop is a few minutes walk and run frequently up to around 12.00am, then the night buses take over. This hotel is superb if you are attending an event at the Ziggo Dome or Amsterdam Arena. There is a local supermarket called Jumbos and a chemist/bakery etc., near by and the Holiday Inn allowed us to eat our food in the breakfast area that we purchased from Jumbo's. The breakfast gives a good choice with cereals, toast, eggs, meat and cheese, croissants and rolls, with hot drinks and cold drinks available also. I found it quite expensive to eat out in Amsterdam so it was welcoming that the breakfast was included in the room rate. There are also computers available with free access to the internet and a bar/small lounge area. We will definitely be returning to this hotel for our next planned trip to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Tip on travelling: We purchased a 72 hour tourism card for travel on trams, metro and buses (cost of...

PROS
clean
very quiet area
staff was wonderfull and spoke multiple languages
large rooms (by european standards)
very nice breakfast- more than just usual pastries and cereal
strong wifi, and two computers in lobby
bikes to rent (affordable)
very close to tram/metro, and they sell tickets at front desk
15 min to city center and musuems by public transportation

CONS
bit far from city center
not much food or shops open near at night

IN summary, this was a very affordable alternative to the smaller, more expensive lodging in the city center.

This hotel is suitable for a maximum 3 nights stay...but let me be more specific: it is a very clean hotel, decent, the room is big enough for two adults, the bathroom is definitely OK...in short, a very good accommodation.

And yes, it is far from the city center but you have direct access to tram 5 and metro 51. The tram is at a 3 minutes walk and it takes you from the hotel trough the main city highlights and to the Central Station (end of line). I think that tram n. 5 has the best route...because it gives you access to everything...the museum square (where you find most of the museums), the flower market, the Dam Square, the main canals (Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht etc), the central station (for transportation and canal cruise). We found it very helpful.

The disadvantage with the location is that at midnight the public transportation stops (they have some night lines but this lines don't help you...the hotel is far). This means that you have to be in time for the last tram, which leaves Central Station at 24.00. Of course, you can take a taxi, but this depends on your budget.

Now, there is one more thing about the hotel: the breakfast is truly express. You won't die of hunger but you don't have a lot to choose from. The cheese and ham are packed (like two slices per package), but don't worry ...they're good to eat...so give them a try. Overall, the breakfast is somehow near basic.

Tips:

- you can buy a transport ticket for 12 hours from the hotel, but in the tram station you have a ticket machine where you can buy with your card whatever kind of ticket you wish (for 12 hours, for 24, 72...)

- if you want to go from the hotel to the airport you can take bus 199...you will find the station near Jumbo supermarket (you'll see it), next to the tram station. It comes twice per hour and it is 4 euro per person. The journey to the airport takes 45 minutes. With a taxi it takes 5 or 10, but you will surely pay more than 4 euro. Or you could go by tram 5 to the Central Station and take the train to the airport. As you like.

Oh, and you have free wifi!

Stayed for one night on a motorcycle trip to Germany. Nice standard of room, immaculately clean. Great Dutch hospitality. Part of a chain but excellently run. Well done to all. My Grandad loved the Dutch people after his experiences at Arnhem. Its easy to see why. Fantastic chilled out people.

We booked in here by mistake, as our office manager got the wrong Holiday Inn. When I arrived I requested a quiet room as I always do, I was instructed that the walls are very thick and the room is okay. I was put in a room right near the lifts directly infront of the glass door that leads to the rooms on my floor. Every time someone came through the hall door, my room door would rattle, at all hours of the day. When I went to the breakfast room in the morning, there were far too few tables for the amount of guests staying there. When I asked the girl for a clean table, they came over cleaned one table for some other guests and disappeared for 10minutes with me hanging around a table like a vagrant. I would not make this same mistake again.

Room Tip: Insist that you have a room as far from the elevator as possible.

Dear Guest,

As General Manager of this hotel, I want to thank you for taking the time to post a review. Our success is dependent on the feedback we get from guests like you. I’m so sorry to hear that you experienced noise in your room and that our team members didn't clean your table directly during breakfast. I can assure you that this is not the norm, and will make every effort to ensure it doesn’t happen again. I hope you’ll give us the opportunity to make this up to you during your next stay.

Sincerely,

Linda de Jong

Located 100 meters from tramway Nr. 5 into city, a good hotel to stay. Parking beside Hotel 8,40 €/day. Not many restaurants around, but no problem because of tramway. Friendly service at the desk, breakfast tables could be cleaned faster.

The hotel was modern and very clean. It has spacious rooms and new furniture, but there is no heating. For us it was a bit too cold in the room. The pillows are indeed too big, so I've slept on the small pillow that was for design on the chair :). The double beds are two single put together. I am a light sleeper so I heard airplanes taking off or landing every single day (I woke up around 6 o'clock ). So, even though, it seems like a quiet area, keep in mind the airplanes. The breakfast was basic but OK. There was a Jumbo supermarket right next to the hotel. The staff was excellent.
The hotel is situated 30 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station and city center, but the trip is pleasant. We recommend the tram 5 for getting from the AMS Central to the hotel and not the subway (you have to change it). Also, take the tram 5 for your trips in the city. You can buy tickets from the ticket machine in the station or from the driver.
Overall, it was a nice stay and we will recommend it to our friends who travel on a budget.
