“Interesting museum but lifted by Corbijn special exhibit”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

MOAM is a good sized museum but with a strange layout and not ideal rooms for watching art. Small rooms and many stairs. The exhibits are very different and appeal to different tastes which is good. Corbijn was excellent but I did not leave with a lasting impression.

“Gallery NOT Museum”
Reviewed September 1, 2011

This is a a photo gallery not a museum, if you expect anything on the history of photography forget it. I was disappointed that part of the building was closed to set up a new show but judging by the majority of things on display I might not have missed much. As a photographer I am always looking for interesting takes on subjects and technique but was left uninspired by work that I would have dismissed or deleted.

The Corbin exhibition was the redeeming feature and but did not merit the 8 Euro entrance fee.

“Always a spectacular photo display”
Reviewed August 11, 2011

I have been to Foam several times over the last few years and it never disappoints. The exhibits are always well displayed and the website offers great explanations about the exhibit and the artist. The layout of the museum is very manageable...the space is perfect...and you walk away with memories of it all. You could easily see everything in a hour or spend several hours really studying the exhibits if you prefer.

There is a coat rack downstairs and lockers to store your personal items (both free)...another feature which allows you really enjoy the museum without the burden of your personal goods. They are open daily (good for a Monday when most other museums are closed) and they are open until 9p on Thursday and Friday. Free guided tours are also offered on Thursday evening in both Dutch and English.

Even if you aren't a photography buff, I highly recommend Foam as it will not disappoint.

“Don't bother”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

This was a very disappointing gallery. Three small exhibitions without proper explanations for one of them. No permanent collection of photographs. Someone decided that the labels had to be next to the photos in tiny print -why not increase the size and put them on one of the spare walls or have a handout? We didn't pay because we had the Iamsterdam card but it is certainly not worth €16.

“A must for photo nerds.”
Reviewed June 15, 2011

As a photographer, I often visit FOAM to check out the current exhibition. Every time, regardless of whether I am familiar with the particular artist beforehand, the series of works I see there leaves me inspired. I especially enjoyed the exhibition of Alexander Rodchenko and that of Richard Avedon. I'm already looking forward to seeing the photos by Anton Corbijn! The book shop is nice too, I've purchased a couple of posters there as souvenirs. If you can, get yours eyes on a copy of the FOAM magazine.
