I stayed at this hotel last year and came back again with 3 of my mates (we are all in our 40's) for a good weekend away. We were all happy with this hotel (as I was last year).
Sure, it's not luxurious, but it's no dump either. In Amsterdam you pay for what you get and if you want a basic but clean hotel with en suite facilities right in the middle of the Red Light District then this fits the bill.
Location - At the Zeedijk end of Warmoesstraat. That's 5 minutes walk from Centraal Station and the same to Dam Square. You are right in the madness of the Red Light District, but only 10 minutes walk away from the peace and beauty of The Jordaan district. The flower market is around 15 minutes walk and the Leidseplein is about 20 minutes walk away. Nowhere else that you would want to visit of a weekend away is more than 25 minutes walk away. And of a night time, you can literally fall out of a bar anywhere in the Red Light District and be back at the hotel within 5 minutes. For me, that can't be bettered.
Hotel - It's a canal house that dates from 1725 but was modernised last in 1999. Other reviews have criticised the lift in the hotel, but during my stay it worked perfectly. Yes it is small and a bit slow, but considering the age of the building I was just grateful that there was a lift at all. The stairs are winding and narrow, but this is normal for Amsterdam hotels of this type so that doesn't bother me - in fact it adds to the character of the building. Both rooms I have stayed in have been at the back of the hotel - downside is that they were a bit dark and needed the lights on in the daytime, upside was that they were quiet of a night time as they don't overlook Warmoesstraat. The bed was comfortable but if you like high pillows you will have to ask for extra ones at reception. The bathroom was fine and I managed to get a comfortable temperature for the shower water quite easily. The TV is standard for this grade of Amsterdam hotel - a 14" portable on a wall bracket. Loads of channels but only BBC1, BBC News 24 & CNN in English.
Service - I spoke to 5 different staff members over the weekend and they were all very pleasant and helpful, especially Thomas who gave us a very happy and warm greeting on our arrival. Our cleaner was excellent and she changed the bedding and towels every day. Overall, the service was excellent.
Breakfast - Served from 7am to 10am. We weren't up early enough for this (!) so I can't give an opinion on it. If you need a late breakfast there are plenty of places within 5 minutes of the hotel to get one, but I particularly recommend a cafe/bar called Het Karbeel almost opposite the hotel itself.
Summary - This is, as my title suggests, a good basic hotel in a great location. Not somewhere you'd want to spend hours in, but if you are just looking for a decent base whilst exploring the city then you should consider this hotel. The official rating is only '2 star', but as I think it is very good for its grade, I have rated it '4' overall.
