“BUDGET hotel”
Reviewed October 11, 2012 via mobile

Was a bit anxious when we checked into this place set up doesnt seem right - doesnt feel like a hotel. So its true we had to ring the bell of another building and walk up some steepish stairs to get to your room but I was glad of the security to be honest.
room was right above busy damrak but my experience was that i slept right through. my roomie didnt though and was burned several times by a radiator which the bed was next to. Couldnt really go anywhere else.
There was a particularly bad smell coming from toilet probably sewage which was a bit offputting. Thankfullywe only stayed one night and could skip shower.
Staff seem pleasant enough and location is brill just step outside your door and your in the middle of it.
Good steakhouse downstairs where hotel guests get 10% off worth a visit.

Rooms are basic but clean. Bathrooms are in the hallways which, while slightly annoying, isn't a deal breaker.

Wifi works fine.

Great location, the stairs are rather annoying but other than that it's fine.

I stayed in a 10 room dorm at the Orange Tulip. The room was clean and divided in two, so really there were only 4 or 5 beds in each room. It had a large window looking over the street which provided for some cool air during the night. The proximity to the street did not bother me, however the street is quite noisy so if you're a light sleeper i might suggest bringing some ear plugs along. The bathrooms/Showers were clean and the wifi connection worked well. I didn't book in advance so it was a bit expensive at 50 Euros for the night, so i'd suggest planning ahead to get a better price.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper you may wish to ask for a room towards the rear of the building as the...

I didn't find out about the reviews of this place until it was a week before my trip.
I had already paid my deposit so didn't bother booking somewhere else. Big mistake.

Let's start with the good things...

Pros:
- Awesome location, it's right in the middle of Amsterdam Central.
- The bed was alright.
- No bed bugs or roaches.

Cons:
- Expect to be woken up constantly all night by people slamming doors in the hallway.
- The bathroom had a very strong, unpleasant and overpowering smell which is hard to describe.
- Want to use an iron? That'll be 20 Euros deposit please. It doesn't include an ironing board.
- Expect to pay your room deposit *again* once you check in, as "tourist tax".
- Once you check in, you have to leave the hotel entrance, go two doors down, wait for someone to answer the goddamn bell then haul your luggage up two sets of ridiculous stairs.
- Every time you want to grab something from your room you have to ring that bloody bell.
- The price was ridiculously high for what is a 2 star hotel at best, and a building in need of demolishing at worst.
- The stairs were an ordeal.

This is the only hotel where I've skipped showering just because of the smell in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

Stayed for three nights over August bank Holiday.
The room was clean to a OK standard, we didn't expect much after reading the previous reviews but i think some of these reviews are unfair, we saw no trace of bed bugs or rodents??
The place just looked a bit tired here and there.
412 Euros for a three night stay, it was not good value but the location is spot on and the staff are really friendy.

If your looking for a convenient location and a relaxed informal hotel this is your place :)

Ive stayed here on 2 occasions and the standard do seem to of dropped. I wouldnt say its a cheap hotel to stay at anymore. The only plus side to the Hotel is the great location on the main street were their are plenty of restaurants, shops and museum's.

Room Tip: the only room i would suggest is on the second floor it has a balcony.
