“Great value hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2009

We were a little anxious as some of the reviews lately have been very mixed but we had a great stay. Yes, the staff were not the same every day but all were helpful and polite and provided extra pillows and ice for our drinks faster than some 5 star hotels we have stayed in. The lift was an adventure every time but as we had the attic rooms we were glad to have it. Both our rooms were clean and the bathrooms fantastic. The towels didnt match but who cares as they were clean as was the bed linen. Location was superb and breakfast fine.Free internet was always working and available and a real bonus. Yes , there are a few "red lights" near by but we felt safe at all times and would recommend this unique hotel to all of our friends.

Made very welcome upon arriving. Great location beside the canal, Beautiful views and allowed one to experience the everyday people in Amsterdam. Life very small, but added to the quirkyness of the hotel. Three couples - rooms all great. Very clean. Breakfast plentiful and service excellent. Easy walking to trams, main train station, red light district, cafes. Able to leave our bags at the hotel for a couple of hours after checkout . Communication for booking was so easy. Easy access to Ann franks House and the hop on hop off canal boats. Look forward to our next stay.

Good value for money. Clean spacious room. Good breakfast. A little bit noisy outside at night.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Brouwer during our first trip to Amsterdam in May of 2009. The Brouwer is a quaint canal house conveniently located in the heart of Singel 83. We stayed in the Vermeer room for three nights and we were very comfortable during our stay. Our room was spacious (for European standards), clean, and had all the amenities we needed. An added bonus was our room overlooked the canal. Yes, the Brouwer is located on the edge of the red light district. However, that never bothered us and we felt completely safe during our stay. My only complaint is that a double bed in Europe is nothing more than two twin beds pushed together. At times the beds would shift away from each-other creating a gap - small complaint. We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Brouwer and hope to return one day.

The Hotel Brouwer is an old canal house that looks somewhat shabby and "gone to seed," although it is clean and has a convenient location. It serves a nice Dutch breakfast, although the coffee was below average--much less good than one gets in almost any cafe. If the hotel decor were a little more imaginative and artistic, and had fresh paint, etc., it would be far more attractive. The main problem, though, is that the hotel is badly run. During the five days we were there, there was a different person in charge virtually every day. The individuals in question were almost all very nice, and quite efficient, but communication among them seemed to have been poor. For example, the woman in charge when we arrived (who we were later told was the manager) told us that breakfast hours were from 8.30 to 10.30. When we pointed out that this wouldn't work for us, because my wife would be participating in a conference a half hour's tram ride away that began at nine every morning, she said they could stretch a point and provide breakfast for us at 8. The next day she was again on duty and did serve us breakfast at 8. But on at least two of the succeeding days, different staff members only arrived to begin preparations at 8, and neither knew anything about the arrangement to provide us with breakfast at 8 instead of 8.30. On one of the mornings we had to leave without breakfast and went to a very poor place across the road (the only one open) where we were charged 20 euros for a bad breakfast. To her credit, the person in charge that day did refund us half of that sum. On one day, our room was not cleaned at all, the bed was not made, and we were given no clean towels. When we returned late in the day to discover this situation, there was fortunately someone in charge (another new person), who gave us towels willingly enough and apologized--but in a reasonably well run hotel that would not have occurred. Finally, the side door of the hotel (which is the one we were expected to use, and which our key opened) was only two doors away from a brothel and the beginning of the red light district, which began just a little way down the alley into which our door opened. Many visitors might well regard this as advantageous, but it is not a fact divulged by the hotel web site or its listings in guidebooks. The rate of 95 euros per night (including breakfast, but excluding tax) impressed us as excessive in the abstract, but for canal-house b & b's in Amsterdam seems to be about average, or even a little lower than the average.

We stayed at Hotel Brouwer on a recent trip to Amsterdam. It cost about 95 euros, which when converted to dollars was about $135 at that time. The hotel is small, but our room was fairly large, very clean, had a recently updated bathroom and small flat screen TV. We stayed in the Vermeer Room, which had a nice view of the canal outside the front of the hotel. The only drawback was that we had two twin beds that were pushed together to form a large bed. Of course, this did not work over the course of the night, but we managed. The best thing about the hotel is its location. It is within walking distance of the train station and most must-see sights. We spent 5 days there and walked everywhere, except when we took a train out to Zaanse Schans for the day (very touristy, by the way, but worth it if you like windmills). One small complaint is that breakfast did not start until 8:30 AM, which for us was a late start on the day. Also, they do not try to accommodate people who have to leave early for the airport. If you leave before 8:30, sorry, but no breakfast for you. Other than that, we thought the staff were generally friendly and helpful.

because of its location and price booked this hotel on the internet direct via email with the hotel the correspondence was always excellent

when we first arrived our immediate thought was "oh my god what have we done
what a dive'" BUT DON'T LET LOOKS SPOIL YOUR EXPERIENCE
the place is very very very very old,
The elavator could only hold one person sitting on one suitcase it was the smallest elevator I have ever seen we only used it to send our bags up and down
we used the stairs all the time we were there as the elavator was scary for us there are two sets of stairs one spiral modern and one very old wooden when I used these stairs I craweld up hands and knees and went down back to the wall one step at a time as the steps are very narrow and steep but it wasn't a problem I got used to it after day 2
we had the Rembrandt room what a surprise a very spacious and clean room with windows all around views overlooking the canal GREAT

To sum it up All I can say is the building is centuraries old and so is the furnishings
modern by no means the house has a lot of history which adds to its character
we had a wonderful experience stayed 5 nights
breakfast was good the rooms were cleaned everyday the staff were great friendly and very helpful ( we only saw them at breakfast time but you can ring the bell if needed at other times)
we had a very early morning departure the janitor made us hot crossants to take with us as we would of missed breakfast and also confirmed all our flights for us as the free internet wasn't working
the location is excellent free internet price very affordable for amsterdam we would stay here again on our next trip to amsterdam it is on the corner of the red light district but it is not a problem at all

on our travels around europe we stayed in much more modern hotels and paid much more for the privaledge but we had the best time and memories at the brouwer
if you want to stay in all day then stay at a 5 star resort but if you want to experience the real amsterdam this is the place
