We stayed 5 days in july with my wife and two childs.. Room was not clean. Hotel wasn't close the train station, approximative 15 minutes for walk. We had very noisy neighbours all the 5 days. We paid prepayment 15 € a person for breakfast, 4 person 5 days, 300 €. We did'nt like breakfast and we decided to give up after two days. They gave back 134€ , instead of 180€ for the tax reason!. We did'nt ate breakfast later 3 days, but we paid tax!!!. We will never stay there.
But, Amsterdam is wondurful city.

We chose the Bastion as we wanted to be walking distance from the Olympic Stadium in case we could not get public transport after a concert - we needn't have worried though, there was a 'battalion' of trams outside and the buses were still running!

Having been made aware by other contributors here, I reseached the location of the hotel on Google Street View, this made it easier to find! We got the train from Schiphol Airport to Lalylaan Station, just outside we got the tram to Surinamplein. Looking back the way you have come, cross to the right hand side - by the little garden. Walk straight on with the main road on your left, and you will find a path alongside a cycle lane, follow the path and, at the end, turn left through the subway and the hotel is immediately on the right. It takes less than 10 minutes, You can walk on the other side of the road but there is a steep flight of steps down to the hotel - not good with a suitcase!

We arrived before the 1400hrs check-in time and were pleased that a room was available right away. Reception staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient.

The room was as expected, clean and functional. The air-con was good. The main road outside suggested there might be a noise problem, but there wasn't. Not a lot of tea/coffee and not very nice powdered milk. We asked for some 'real' milk at the bar and this was not a problem. There is a small fridge in the room which was handy. (There is a drinks machine in reception which was useful for water, saved carrying it from town). There is a safe in the room as well. The bathroom was small but spotlessly clean.

As my fellow traveller is a Vegetarian, we checked out the restaurant menu, the choice for her was limited. We ordered a snack lunch, we were told it would take a while, which it did. My toasted sandwich was fine but, her tomato soup had - wait for it - meatballs in it!!!! Needless to say she couldn't eat it! Our fault - we should have asked!

Breakfast was OK on day one, again not a great deal of choice for a Vegetarian -13 Euros is a lot for basically coffee, bread and jam. On the second day, no fruit salad and what fruit there was looked a little past it's best. As a meat/cheese eater, I was able to fill up on these so, didn't go hungry. There was smoked salmon and local meats too - I'd have liked the salmon with the scrambled eggs but, these wasn't any egg left on day one, on day two there was but it wasn't very good. I think for 13 Euros, it is realistic to expect a standard to be maintained and food to be replenished automatically. It would be so easy to get this right. Despite this, the staff are very nice and the restaurant itself is a lovely.

In general terms, this hotel was absolutely fine for our purpose, It has a nice friendly atmostphere, it is very clean and comfortable.

This hotel was very nice and cosy and very good value. Is not far from transport and is 15-20 min with the tram to center amsterdam and 5 min walk from a train station that takes 5-7 min to schipol airport. Overall, i would go back and stay there again.

Positives:
1) Considering expensive hotels in Amsterdam during peak time, this was a good buy at low rate.
2) It looked a decent size hotel in a quite location.
3) 5 mins from Tram station although hotel advices to use Suriname station which is good 15mins walk but there is another station "Derkinderenstraat"
4) Soup was good
5) Free Wifi

Negatives:
1) Room was not cleaned enough
2) Not enough toiletries
3) Next day they didn't even bothered to change towels or take away used plates/cups
4) The room was for two adults but everything was provided for only 1 adult.
5) Not many options of food around this hotel

A couple of friends and my wife and I stayed in Amsterdam at this hotel for three days. We were told that we were close to the metro, but it took us 10- 15 minutes to walk. The hotell was very difficult to find, no sign when we came out of the metro. It took some hours to get our rooms ready, and we could not understand why others got their rooms. We got a small room next to the metro/railway line which gave some noise. My wife needed a hairdryer, but it was not available. We put our names (my wife and the other lady in our company) on a list and we were promised a hairdryer- IT NEVER CAME- although we asked several times. This is really not good enough.
The breakfast was ok.
The area round the hotel was not very nice. We think we did not get value fro the money we spend stayinga t the hotel.
Asterdam -yes - Bastion - never again

A couple of friends and me went to visit Amsterdam for both my friends birthday and the Queen's day celebrations. The hotel was about 2miles from the centre, and takes about 45mins-1hr to walk. There is a tram stop only a couple of minutes away which can get you into the centre in about 15mins. The hotel room was very small, but very clean, we only needed a place to sleep so we were not to bothered about facilities etc. The price in our case was a little high in my opinion but this is no doubt due to the fact it was Queens Day weekend.

The hotel is great for a couple of nights in Amsterdam if you plan on going out in the morning and returning last thing at night, however the cost of your stay here would need to reflect this over staying in the centre itself. An average taxi ride was between 15-20 Euro's so you should factor this in, as the Tram's do stop around 1am I was told.

If the location was right in the centre then I would have given it more stars, but the distance, and the cost of taxi's will push the price of your holiday up.

So to sum up, if you can get a better location for a similar price maybe give that a go, if like me you plan on spending the whole day in the centre then stay here, I can at least say this hotel is friendly, clean and quiet.

we didn't find anything else, that's the reason why we stayed here, it's pretty much outside the city, i didn't find it at first so i wandered around for half an hour...

very small bedrooms. not central, pretty expensive for not a central location...

will never see me again (not only because of the hotel, but i didn't like amsterdam that much either)
