Would never have put Nieuwmarkt at 37 on a list of things to do in Amsterdam personally, not that I have anything against it; It is a lovely and Vibrant square, on the edge of the Red Light District of De Wallen, and the china town area of Zeedijk. There are some good cafes, coffeeshops, bars, around the area, as is one of the cities old gates - which has served as many things, and currently a cafe/restaurant - in De Waag.
A useful stopping point when visiting the other attractions in that area, or a good place to go if staying in the area, but dont trek there from other parts of town just to see the square alone, although now there is a new (not sure how long its been there, but wasnt there in the summer of 2012) 'I amsterdam' feature, like the one at the museumplein, and I did see another one somewhere too, so maybe that will be a reason to go.
Nicer in the summer when the cafes have terraces on the front but still busy in winter.
Have fun in Amsterdam!
