I like visiting the mionument because it has a personal historical link. My mother survived the starvation of the last WWII winter in Amsterdam, and was there during the shootout during the liberation festivities, when German troops felt threathened by the Dutch crowds, and the Allied troops had not yet arrived. Over my desk in one of the certificates stating that the bearer sponsored one square centimeter of the Dam Square to pay for the monument.
I can only recommend to read up on the history of the Netherlands in general and Amsterdam in particular before your visit - you'll get a lot more out of it.
