I like visiting the mionument because it has a personal historical link. My mother survived the starvation of the last WWII winter in Amsterdam, and was there during the shootout during the liberation festivities, when German troops felt threathened by the Dutch crowds, and the Allied troops had not yet arrived. Over my desk in one of the certificates stating that the bearer sponsored one square centimeter of the Dam Square to pay for the monument.

I can only recommend to read up on the history of the Netherlands in general and Amsterdam in particular before your visit - you'll get a lot more out of it.

The National Monument is a monument where the victims of WWII are remembered.
It is located on Dam Square, whilst your there have a little look and take a photo.

There isn't anything particularly special or impressive about this monument. If you are in Dam Square anyway, it is worth a look but probably not worth a journey. When I visited, it was very busy around the monument and there were flocks of pigeons all over the place that would perch on you and eat from your hand if you were that way inclined.

The monument itself is quite ugly. The events it commemorates are of course well worth commemorating and a more beautiful or impressive monument.

We liked that the monument was representative of the suffering endured during the war and that so many people are here, which is located in Dam Square. This is the ultimate gathering place to sit back and watch people who are visiting, shopping watching, and enjoying the day. Our family spent several hours in this area and took several pictures of the monument which is beautiful. I just hope that people gathered here remember what this monument is all about...
