The Magere Brug, or Skinny Bridge is a bridge over the river Amstel in Amsterdam. Use of the bridge has been limited to pedestrians and cyclists since 2003. The centre-part is opened many times, daily, in order to let river traffic pass. The sightseeing tour boats are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed. The bridge is decorated with 1,200 light bulbs which are turned on in the evening.
A story told to tourists about the origins of the 1691 version of the bridge is that it was built by 2 sisters who lived on opposite sides of the Amstel river and wanted to be able to visit one another, every day.
Located near the Ermitage musuem & the Amsterdam Opera, built on the Amstel river, this white paint wooden double drawbridge, connects the 2 banks of the Amstel river between the Keizersgracht canal & the Prinsengracht canal.
Also, Being of a narrow dimension, it is now reserved only for the use of the pedestrians and cyclists.
One of the most romantic place in Amsterdam this spot is excellent for photography or selfies lovers especially at night where several hundred candles provides a truly magical dimension to the scenery.
Delightful piece of Amsterdam. Especially on late summer nights. A place to stop, take in the view and admire the city from the water.
We saw this bridge open to let a boat pass under which is apparently quite unusual. We also saw it closed and walked across it. It is different from the standard bridges and worth seeing.
Worth seeing, mainly at night. It is typical for Amsterdam to have bridges but this one is one of a kind.
