“Small but interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

This museum was included on our iAmsterdam card, but we would have gone there anyway. I had no idea how much the Dutch suffered during the Second World War, and how much they tried to resist the Nazis. Explanations were in English and Dutch, a little small occasionally, but well laid out. Very moving and interesting.

“Fascinating and well-organised”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

This is a very well-organised museum that takes a slightly different approach to WWII-era history. The focus on the subtle and more revolutionary ways that the Dutch resisted the Nazi occupation is absolutely fascinating. As a non-Dutch speaker it would have been helpful if the printed items (such as wartime posters or newspapers) could have been translated as I was sometimes left really curious about certain parts of the exhibit, but not speaking Dutch is certainly my own fault! Highly recommended museum.

“So interesting!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2014

This is a well done museum experience, explaining the Holocaust and occupation by the Nazis in the Netherlands. Lots of information and was one of our favorite museums of our visit to Amsterdam! For anyone interested in WWII or the Holocaust, this is a must!!

“Understanding History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2014

This modern, well laid out museum looks at Holland in the lead up to WWII, the rise of the NSB, following onto the period of occupation (1940 to 1945).The main points are covered like the general strike of 1941 and other strikes that followed; what it was like to be under occupation, the Royal family in exile, the implementation of the deportation of Jews, the resistance and how these organisations evolved. Many people’s views and stories are displayed along with individual photographs, archival photos, ID cards and papers and items that showed what it was like to be an occupied country or part of the resistance movement. The display culminates with liberation, and the outcome for Holland.
There is also a small section on the Dutch colonial Empire and WWII in Java. Here thousand of Dutch men fought against Japan.
I found this museum very interesting. The stories that are told on the boards are very honest and very human. Some stories made me smile at a person’s defiance or tenacity; others brought tears to my eyes. Always reminding me how fortunate I am never to have lived through a war, while applauding the courage of those who stood up for their beliefs, and in some cases risked their lives for unknown “someone”. For the betterment of our world stories like these need to be told.
To add another layer, visit to the Hollandsche Schouwburg Memorial, down the street and around the corner on Plantage Middenlaan. This was the Jewish deportation depot to the death camps. Across the road is a small plaque that identifies the Jewish children’s nursery.
Entry Cost E8.00, free with Museumkaart.
Photography allowed; no flash.
Visit time: allow about 2 hours or more to see all exhibits. If you just want to have a condensed overview without all the side rooms, probably allow about an hour or so.

“Full of Sadness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2014

Hard to give such a sad story a 5 rating as I did leave feeling sad, but also incredibly grateful for the life I have and with the hope we have learned something from that terrible time and with admiration for the brave souks who fought the good fight. Audio program helps I believe. Well thought out museum that has you thinking.
